  1. so im uploading my first DV through Adobe Premiere, and 47 sec of video is around 150MB- this just wont do, how do i compress it down to a more managable size so that i could put this on a VCD or VCDs (about 1.5 hrs of video)
    thanks

edit: ok so i compress it with tmpeg, but the quality on the compressed file is poor, is this what always happens after compression?

  2. If VCD is not good enough for you try SVCD. Remember though the higher the bitrate you use the larger the filesize, hence the less video you can fit on 1 disc.

As simply as possible, a compression alogarithm such as MPEG2 uses a structure called a GOP (group of pictures) to 'analyse' and discard video data that has/is determined to be uninterpertable to the human eye.
This is done by starting with a (I)ntra frame and then "guesssing" forward then both ways with P & B frames.
Once a video (audio / photo) is compressed using a "LOSSY" format then it is pointless to put it back to its original format because DATA has been dropped in order to save space.

A simpler anology would be : Compression is like TAXES. You start off with $100 the government takes $40 (more space in wallet - lol).In the end your pay is less but it looks acceptable to those that are in a higher (compression) tax bracket.
