I am currently trying to edit an MPEG 2 file for the first time and I am having great difficulty doing so. I have tried several programs ranging from TMPEGEnc to Womble MPEG VCR to Adobe Premiere and now Cyberlink's Power VCR II.
All I need to be able to do is trim segments out of captured MPEG 2 files. I have had the most luck using Power VCR II but there's only one hitch, when I save the file after editing, it saves the MPEG 2 video but there is no audio whatsoever. If anyone is familiar with this program please tell me what I might do to remedy this problem. Thank you.

What do I set the line in to? My options are SPDIF-In, CD Digital, MIDI, CD Audio, Line In, Microphone, Auxiliary, TAD-In, or Wave.
I know that this program is generally used for video recording but I am only using it as a video editor dince it is incompatible with my input device (Dazzle DVC 150). Will this make a difference?

    Try MPEG2CUT.

How are you capturing the MPEG2? Bitrate? CBR? VBR?

Also, many of the authoring programs allow you to trim the video (like TMPEGEnc DVD).

Well, I only have the trial version of Womble MPEG VCR and when I press record it doesn't do anything. Is this due to the fact that it is not the full registered version?

Well my MPEG2VCR doesn't have a record button.
Why would it - it's an editor.

Anyway, If your video is MPEG2 and has not been inverse tececined,
then MPEG2VCR will cut exactly where it shows on the display.
I proved this by generating a video with the frame numbers in the
    frames and testing. it.
The demo only does about 5 seconds of video though. not enough to
    test with.

You can do this with TMPGenc accurate to within about 1/2 second.
I did it for years. most commercials fade in and out to the movie
with blank black. You can usually put the cut in one of these
    spaces.

I'll give you the method if you want.

you should have your incoming sound plug into either your mike or your line input of your sound card

then pick whichever you input that you are using

How to edit MPEG2 video as accurately as possible with TMPGenc.

First get a version of VirtualDub that will open MPEG2 files.

    Open the video with Vdub.
Run TMPGenc and go to the Mpeg tools -> Merge and Cut

Move windows so you can see Vdub and TMPGenc at the same time.

    LOOP:
Find the first (next) movie section in Vdub and mark both ends with mark-in mark_out. (First one will be start of movie to start of first commercial)
(Seek to nearest I frame with the little yellow Keyframe arrows)

In TMPgenc click ADD and pick the file and then double click it or hit EDIT
In the Edit Merge Item window TYPE IN the start and end timecodes from the Vdub display.
Hit OK. If there are more sections of movie to get then GOTO LOOP

You should now have a list of multiple sections from the same file.
Hit RUN and Tmpgenc will cut them out and glue them all together.

This seems complicated but you get used to it and it gets the cut points accurate.
