hacked firmware on 104 not working

I 'upgraded' my firmware from 1.30 to 1.40 (the hacked one for 2x burning on Ritek media), but it didn't work. When I put my Riteks in, it still only gives me the option to burn at 1x.

The drive is still burning just like it did before, so it's not that huge of a problem, although I would kind of like to burn them at 2x (they are G03s). I tried changing the firmware to 1.40 (the hacked one that allows you to burn at 2x on any media) but realized I have to downgrade the firmware first.

I guess what I'm asking is, has anyone else had successes or heartaches with burning riteks on a hacked 104? I just want to know if it's worth the trouble.

keep in mind that the hacked firmware may override your burner's internal controls...

the reason a burner chooses a certain speed to burn a particular media is because that's the OPTIMAL burn speed....if you override this, burning faster than optimal may not be good in the long run...

also, make sure your media is truely rated 2X

I've burned around three hundred G03's over the last year at 2x on my A04/104 with hacked firmware 1.31. I haven't tried going to 1.40 and I probably won't since I don't want to mess with what works.

Keep in mind if you use your computer you could eventually run into a problem... safer to turn it off and stay in bed.

true enough... plus, dvd burners are cheap enough now... they're almost recyclable.

i guess i'll try downgrading to 1.31

I was burning riteks at 2x with 1.31, but recently went with 1.40 2x 4all so I could burn princo 4x discs at 2x because they are now cheaper than the riteks. Everything went well and I can now decide for myself if I should burn at 1 or 2x, without letting the obsolete disc interogation in the official firmwares make that decision for me.

I'm absolutely baffled at your problems with the 104 and Ritek G03s. I've used a Panasonic 104 with factory original fireware 1.30 and I have had no problem burning well over 100 Riteks G03s at 2x. None of 'em have gone bad after > 6 months, so the setup seems stable.
Moreover, the need to "upgrade" to firmware 1.31 or higher in order to burn Ritek G03s at 2x also baffles me. On the website where I get my 100 packs of G03s, www.allmediaoutlet, they remark that the G03s they sell are guaranteed to burn at 2x only at firmware 1.30 on a Pannie 104.
Could the problem be that you must downgrade to firmware 1.30 rather than upgrade above 1.31?
All I can say is, 1.30 works perfectly for me at 2x with G03s.
(I use Win 2K Pro with a P4 2.4 ASUS m'board and Prassi Primo DVD.)

my m8 got the pioneer 104
i tried to upgrade his firmware to 1.30
it said drive not found error
im not sure why it said it maybe his drive is set to slave
any1 updated there drive while it was set to slave
my m8 dosnt know much about computers and stays about 300 miles away so i cant see his system at hand
whats the best firmware for the 104
he just wants a region free hack

I disagree with this statement, problems are more likely than not operator error not firmware caused, IMHO.

My problem isn't with a 104, it's with a 106. I just got a pioneer 106D and I'm wondering if I should upgrade the firmware (although I can't find a link on their corporate site) or if there even is a firmware upgrade for my model. Why? Because I've burned (Fujifilm +R) 9 coasters out of 10. Every program I've used and every combination of programs has created a coaster when attempting to make a Video DVD, yet if I make an image instead of burning it to disk, it works fine on Daemon Tools. I burned a data DVD just to make sure something wasn't wrong with the opticals... the data DVD burned without issue and plays great, no issue with burning CDs either.

The princo 4x 's have been good. I've been using them for projects of 4.2 gigs or less, while I use my riteks for full 4.36 gig burns. No reason really, other than I had an old batch of princos and they were junk over 4 gigs, lots of movie lock ups after that point....
