How much video(time wise) will I be able to fit on a (SVCD) I am trying to figure out how many CD's a football game would take. (The raw files with commercials and all are 3.6 GB and 2.95 GB). I also can't figure out how to properly edit out the commercials. I tried the merge and cut function on TMPGEnc, but when I tried to play the clip back, there was no sound. What is the best way to go about doing this? I think even after editing I would still be looking at roughly 3:25 of footage. How many discs is that going to take? How about if I were to burn it to DVD?(will be getting a DVD-R soon)

What are you using to capture?
Do you have sound before you use TMPGEnc?
There's no reason for the merge and cut function to eliminate the sound, for simple clipping I use it all the time.
Post back with further details (have you read the guides on this site? they're very good)
Willtgpo, my real dad, told me to make a maximum of 5,806 posts on vcdhelp.com in one lifetime. So I have. -

HoldThatTigerRag,
Let me guess, you are from Clemson?
There are calculators available in the tool section and on other websites that will calculate how much you can fit, which bitrate to use, any other useful paramters for VCD/SVCD/DVD.
As a rule of thumb, how much you can fit depends on how poor quality you can live with.
I have always been unhappy with VCD format, and more than 20 minutes on an SVCD.
Sounds like you have started down the path. I'll wager that within a year or two, you will probably purchase a DVD burner.
If you plan on this future purchase, you might want to consider burning XSVCDs so that you do not have to re-encode your material when the time comes to move to DVD.
You could also consider cDVD format. There is a LOT of information on both here at this website.Just what is this reality thing anyway? -
Yes, I go to Clemson. How did you guess?
Do you go there? A fan? Or (gulp) a gamecock?
I actually have a DVD-RW on the way from Dell. They screwed up the order on my laptop and sent a CD-RW instead. I am just kind of playing around here. Im not worried too much about the quality, but I want it to look decent. I don't want a FB game to be on 10 different discs. Im thinking it would probably be better to wait and do the FB games when I get the DAC-100, external drive, and DVD-RW.
How do most people go about putting a long video(movie, sporting event, etc.) on the smallest # of discs? What is the lowest bitrate one would probably want to try? -
Also, I guess I should mention that the files are MPEG2. What format are the files that are burned onto a SVCD?

Some of my co-workers gradutated from Clemson, I still have a friend that is working on a graduate degree there.
I've even been to Clemson on a recruiting trip. Just love the look of fear in the potential recruitee's face during the job fair.
I loved Ancheuxes(I cannot even spell it!) down the street from the main campus.
Back to your question, SVCD is MPEG2 format, HOWEVER, it is 480x480 resolution. Standard resolution for a DVD is 720x480.
If I remember correctly, audio for SVCD is 44,100 whereas DVD is 48,000
What is the resolution of your MPEG2 files? You might want to back them up if you plan on using them when your DVD drive arrives.Just what is this reality thing anyway? -
I think im just gonna wait and use the DAC-100 and try my luck with DV to DVD. From what I hear DV is easier to edit. I just ordered a 120 external firewire HD, and will be getting the DAC in a few weeks. DVD-RW should be here in a few days.
This will probably save me some discs and a headache. Thanks for the help though!
Never been to Ancheaux (think that is right). I will have to try it out when i get back up there.
