How to reduce m2v file size to fit one DVD-R?
I am trying to encode a DVD PAL to DVD NTSC.
The length of the PAL movie is 2 hours 14 minutes.
The original PAL DVD is in one DVD-5 single layer disc ripped to 4.83GB. The video is PAL interlace, 4:3, 625 line (704x576)
I use TMPGenc to encode output movie.m2v size is 5.998 GB.
That is too big for one single DVD-R disc.
The TMPGenc setting is:
704x480 NTSC
Frame rate = 23.976
Automatic VBR
DC component precision: 8 bits
Motion search precision: Motion Estimate Search (fast)
What can I do to reduce file size and maintain reasonable good quality picture?
Is there anyway I can make this NTSC DVD similar to the original PAL DVD source?
Thank you for your advise. Jerry

One of the key things you need to do is to use CBR select a value between 4000-6000 kbs TMPGEnc will show you the amount of megs it will take up and from there you can play with the number remember in video bigger is better in terms of quality. Most of my movies fall in this range...
If you need more info let me know.

You can use VBR, but you have to set your own minimum, average and maximum bitrates. Set your average bitrate to fill up about ninety percent of a DVDR. So, you would want the final file size to be roughly 3800 to 3900MBs. Remember you have to leave room for the soundtrack and the possible overhead added when authoring a DVD.
My estimate may not be exact, but it will give you a good idea. Say your average bitrate is 3000. You can then set your max to 6000 or 7000 if you desire. Your minimum can be 2000, 1500 or even 1000. I generally don't set the minimum too low because I noticed some scenes in various movies can "suffer" in some instances. (It's a personal preference here.)
When you use VBR, remember to give TMPGEnc some "wiggle" room. What is really going to affect your final file size is the average bitrate. However, set your max bitrate too low and you will notice it in high action scenes.
I little trick I use is to set TMPGEnc (using the wizard) to encode using the CBR setting to find out the highest average bitrate I can use and still maintain my desired final file size. I then cancel the wizard and reload my project, then pick VBR encoding and use the CBR max for my average setting in the VBR settings. In my experimentations, it comes out fairly close. Hope you can make out what I am trying to explain here! -
Why do you wish to convert to NTSC? Most players and TVs these days support both formats.
Sounds like you're creating a lot more work for yourself. You said the DVD was single-layered. Backing up DVDs doesn't get any easier when you are using a Single-layered DVD. It will be 'exactly' like the original as you wanted. Just use 'DVD Decrypter'. If it doesn't support your Burner then rip it with that then burn with a DVD burning capable Burning program.
If you insist on converting the video to NTSC use a bitrate calculator like the one on this site to tell you the highest bitrate/s you can use, don't guess or you'll end up re-encoding the video constantly to get the size right.
DVDRhelp's Bitrate Calculator:
https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
I also use the basic but effective 'Bitrate Calculator' that comes with the freeware program IfoEdit.
http://www.ifoedit.com
With all Bitrate Calculators they are very close but not perfect, always subtract 50-100kbits/sec of the maximum bitrate that it gives you.
