I wanted to know what are the best ways to backup a DVD to a DVD+R. What utilities or tools does everyone use to get the best quality or take the least amount time to make a backup?

I will continue to look at the guides but I still appreciate hearing some suggetions.

    Thanks

  2. Well, you need to start with a ripper. Nearly everyone uses DVDecrypter, or Smartripper (both freeware). Then a transcoder, or reencoder. DVD2One is the fastest. DVDShrink is free and comparable quality, but is a little slower. InstantCopy 7 gives the best quality of the "one click" programs but takes 3 or 4 times longer than DVD2One or DVDShrink.

If you really want top quality, CCE or TMPGEnc are the programs to use, but both require more time, knowhow, and programs than the other methods.

To burn, most use RecordNowMax, or Nero, both of which cost money, but you can use Imgtools (free) to make an iso image on your hard drive, and then burn that iso with DVDecrypter. There are a few programs that I didn't mention, but these are definately the most used ones.

Ok, thanks. I think InstantCopy 7 isn't freeware so I should go with DVD2One or DVDshrink I think. I already have Nero so that's a go. I will give it a try, thanks a lot.

you may also want to try anydvd - its a program that decodes the disc on the fly.....so you don't need to rip it to your hard drive....you just have to point instantcopy, or dvd2one, or whatever program you are using to the original disc and let it run.

  5. Okay man, let me assure you that this post will spark tons of feedback with everyone stating their opinion as to why their choice of tools is the best to use...

Another quick piece of information to consider is utilizing the search feature on this site as it will enable you to view previous posts that have been made in the past similar to yours. It's just a thought, and may yield pretty good results.

As for what I use and what I feel most people use and what I feel are the most "common" programs:

*DVD Decrypter or Smart Ripper to rip files to your hard drive
*DVD Shrink or DVD2One to compress files from a DVD-9
    *Nero or RecordNow to burn

There are plenty of other programs out there that do similar things, such as Instant Copy, CopyToDVD, DVDFab, etc. My suggestion is to find something that works, and stick with it.
As I always say in this forum regarding DVD issues, and as is my motto in life: You get what you pay for!!

  7. For relative newbies like myself, DVDShrink is pretty much Idiot-proof. This step by step guide helps me:

For burning, I am fortunate enough to have Nero, but there are trial versions of CopyToDVD which i have also used.

  8. Let's keep to your question of freeware DVD to DVDR. ONLY

DVD ripping DVDdecrypter (not needed if you use DVDshrink)
Best tools are DVDshrink (compress) and
DVDfab {ver .17.0}(split over two discs).
    Free burning tool burnatonce.com

Many of the tools listed above are not free.
(Instant Copy, DVD95copy, DVD2one, DVDxcopy, Nero recode, ect...)

    All freeware:

    DVDDecrypter to rip
DVDShrink to transcode (only needed if content won't fit on DVDR)
ImgTool Classic to convert to ISO
DVDDecrypter to burn the ISO to disc.

    Correct.

The only FREEWARE worth a damn in this instance is:

    DVD Decrypter

    and

    DVD Shrink

... but, if you want my opinion on non-freeware, I recommend:

AnyDVD + CloneDVD, with DVD Shrink filling in the gaps for those times that I dislike what CloneDVD does. CloneDVD has a tendency to re-encode the menus and main movie even when it doesn't need to, or at least to mess with them... whereas DVD Shrink ONLY futzes with what you've asked it to futz with.
