I burned my first DVD recently and although it worked out fairly well thanks to the help I got from this site, there is still a minor issue that I would like to work out.
My source video was a widescreen AVI. I converted it to MPEG 2 using VirtualDub and TMPGEnc Plus. I then authored it using TMPGEnc DVD Author and burned it to a DVD+R with Nero 5 using my Sony DRU-500AX.
It looks great but there is bit too much overscan. (I think that's the right term.) When I play the video on my TV using my Toshiba SD4800 it appears that the sides of the widescreen picture are slightly cut. If I zoom out a tiny bit using my player, the picture is perfect and I can see the parts on the edges that were hidden when it was at the default zoom level (as well as a tiny bit of black on the sides but it's not enough to bother me).
What would you recommend?

I think you have selected the wrong "Video Arrange Method" when you converted that AVI to MPG.
In my opinion, to mantain all frame, you should select "Full Screen (keep aspect ratio)". I'm assuming you have used TMPGEnc.
It will add black horizontal borders to mantain Aspect Ratio.
I hope it helps you. -
Thanks for your suggestion, but I had "Full Screen (keep aspect ratio)" selected when I did the conversion.

Overscan varies by TV. My old 25" (now in the bedroom) has a good bit (20 lines top and bottom, and maybe 15 pixels worth on each side). My new 27" has maybe 2 lines top and bottom and jsut a few pixels on the side.
It's on noticeable with subtitles on the upstairs TV. DivX conversions are almost always letterboxed so it doesn't show.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
My suggestion: Get a new TV.
Seriously though, I wouldn't mess with it. There'll be a time later when you get a newer/better TV and it very likely could have less overscan (or even be able to permanently adjust/remove), and if you ever want to give the disc to a friend, it may be different for them.
If you wanted to change it, you'd have to re-encode and that means quality loss.

A cheaper idea:
Try using "Center (custom size)" as arrange method. It will create a 'window' inside screen where your movie will be.
