  1. Soon I will be buying a really old LAPTOP for $50 AUD... it's for school because i have got my account suspended.. now here are its specs: (dont laugh)

    24mb RAM
    120mhz
    2gb HDD
    8x CD
    Linux

at the moment i only have 2 main objectives for the computer...
    > Play Doom II in class
    > Play VCDs

hey- it's all i can afford for something school related- and besides its a bargain for $50 AUD. Now could this machine play MPEG at ALL.. ive been told that it can't but i clearly remember playing MPEG on such a computer in like 1995...

It'll play MPEG1 / VCD types fairly ok (possible stuttering), but forget MPEG2!

For that I would say, minimum:
    PII-266MHz
    32MB RAM
(HD size and rpm, and CD speed can vary dep. on your needs)

More likely for something that doesn't stutter and jerk alot:
    PIII-400MHz
    64MB RAM
bump everything else up a notch

  3. If you want to play MPEG on that computer I suggert you to get Movix

    http://movix.sourceforge.net if I recall correctly.

Basically, it's a very lightweight distribution you can put on a bootable cd, or even butn on the cd containing the MPEG file in order to make the movie itself bootable!

I heard people reporting being able to play DivX on very low spec machines, so mybe you'll be in better luck with MPEG1/2.

Plus you don't have to install anyting on your pc. Just reboot and voilą! A dedicated player
