  1. I was very sceptical using a 30 ft cable, so I did try it with a normal 3 ft. to compare, but I could not see any difference and both look very good to me. Much better than using RCA (whatever the lenght) feeding the AIW with a composite signal.

This is strange to me: how can one get a better signal from the same source without active components?
I may be stupid, but how can a S-Video signal (matter of fact: 2 signals) be generated from a composite source? And even if you can do that with passive filters/splitters: how can that signal be better that the original signal?

  3. Hi Dragonsf

I am not saying that the signal is better.
What I am trying to point out, is that the "active" transformation in my ATI AIW Radeon is doing such a bad job, that doing it passively before it is beeing fed into the AIW is much to be preferred.

I found this out by coincident when I connected my AIW to my S-video VCR and found that the picture on my comp whas much sharper (even if the VCR was fed a composite signal). I just stumbled accross the little converter when I was buying some audio cables, and even if it said S-video to RCA, I spent $4 to try it as a RCA to S-video.

For all I know it might be doing nothing more than feeding the same signal to both color and luminisance (like a simple Y-splitter) in the S-video cable, but I don't care as long as it works

    i use 25 feet myself

they put thicker wire in it

as resistance is the only factor

the 25 foot is actually better than the cheap 3 feets that they make

I don't know how you guys can be having trouble finding 6 foot s-vid cables.

Every KMart and WalMart carry them in their TV Dish department, 3 and 6 foot, maybe 12, usually Magnavox or RCA brand.

I bought a 12 in my local shop, 3.99, didn't cut it to see the guage of the wire, total is near a 1/4 inch diameter.

The unit in the Shack url above is a female-female, so you'd have 4 connections, each of which will provide resistance and possible signal loss.

    @ everyone

where can i find cable that has a composite yellow for my VCR on one side and an S-video male on the other side for a reasonable price. or is there like an adapter that has a yellow female on one side and a s-vdeo male on the other, where can i find them for a reasonable price. i would prefer the first choice, but remember keeping the price in mind. thanks.

Get the adaptor. I bought a few of these at a computer show and they work both ways. If needed, I could post a pic here showing you my setup. I bought a few of these because my Panasonic tv either accepts composite or S-Video so I have all of my older components connected to a switch box. For instance: my NES (nintendo), I have the composite yellow running into the adaptor and then a S-video running from the adaptor into the switchbox. I have the single mono audio cable from the NES into a double composite adaptor and then a regular red and white set of cables into the switchbox.

Price of composite to S-video cable: $39.99
Price of adaptor, 6 ft. s-video cable and composite audio: $28 (at most)

If you get lucky you could find some at a computer show or on ebay. There are some cheap ones on there sometimes.
