Is bugger, as in bugger off, a cuss word in the UK?? I've actually seen on some forums where people censor it like, bu**er off, and other variations. Is it a "bad" word?

    Nah.
Where I come from you'd use it when you hit your thumb with the hammer...

    "..Ouch, bugger!"

I've always one to use it as a friendly insult, so much so as I call my son it when he does something naughty...

'Oi, you, you little bugger, come here!"

..but my wife goes mad (she doesn't like it!)

I suppose my family has always veiwed the word as one of those swear words that isn't, if you know what I mean.

Watch any movie with (that wanker) Hugh Grant in, he says it fifteen times a minute.
Actually, he says' "Oh bagger", but that's just poor old Hugh playing the same role over and over again.

Like my family, we don't mind the word pissed, as in Pissed Off, but I know other families that hate that word.

As you probably know those of us in the UK call those multi-coloured snippets of goo a 'bogie' (pronounced 'bow-gie').

  6. No, twat would come somewhere between F*ck and Bugger, a secondary swear word.

I've never heard a cop car called a bogie before. Typically in the movies you hear, "You got a bogie on your tail" or something like that. Here we call them Cops, pigs, po-pos, flatfoots. Stuff like that. Of course in the Blues Brothers they were 'Rollers'.

We con't view flash here at work, but I'm guessing it's about the origin of "cuss" words. For example: For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Am I right, or am I way off???

  20. Nope, it talks about what a flexible word it is and tells of the many wonderful ways in which it can be used!

    Quite funny!

  25. Bugger is used alot over here (Australia) and recently was the cause of some controversy.

One of our car manufacturer's (Toyota) used the word in a series of their advertising where various events would cause people to go "oh bugger". Anyway to cut a long story short, our friendly (but very prone to whinging) neighbours, New Zealand took offence to the word because they (and supposedly the literal meaning) of the word is to have sex with an animal.

Now, anyone with some knowledge about Australia/New Zealand knows that we love nothing more to give them a ribbing about them "loving" their sheep. In the end I believe Toyota pulled the ads in NZ but left them going in Australia were they were a bit of a fad.
