I need help on backing up TV episodes, I dont mind splitting on to disks, or compressing as a last resort? i have looked at one of the guides which seemed a bit long winded. It would be an extra bonus if i could keep the Menus.

i use ifoedit to split to 2 disc
as episode dvd are already compressed
and i feel they don't need anymore compression -
Vance could you please be kind enough to tell me the procedure that you use to split it to two disc? i only know the basics of ifoedit, and am still getting use to backing up dvds.
Also will using ifo edit enable the menus?, or will it just rip the movies?
Many thanks -
rip your movie in backup with smartripper
or file mode with dvd decrypter
open ifoedit (i have my ifos files open automatically with ifoedit, a trick i got from mackem x)
had to the main VIDEO_TS ifo, click open
click vob extra
head down to split to 2dvd-r and click it
follow the rest of the directions. i haven't done this in a long while but i know it pretty basic from there.
you get to keep everything -
First, I am assuming you're talking about making
a fair use copy of a commercial DVD full of TV
epsiodes that you already own. If you're talking
about making a DVD-R of VHS tapes you have
recorded off the air, that's a different kettle of fish.
Backing up DVDs of TV episodes is incredibly
simple. It is *much* simpler than making a
copy of a DVD containing a 2-hour-long movie.
The reason why it's so simple is that TV shows
typically last less than an hour. This means that
each TV show typically fits in one VOB file on
the DVD.
So all you have to do is:
[1] Use either DVDDecrypter or Smartripper
to scan your DVD;
[2] Go into FILES view and take a look at which
files are about one gigabyte in size.
[3] Select only those to rip.
[4] Make sure you use STREAM PROCESSING.
[5] Open up the VOB files on your hard disk
with TMPGEnc and go to MPEG TOOLS, then
SIMPLE DE-MULTIPLEX, then hit <RETURN>
You will now have a bunch of files named
[filename].m2v and [filename].ac3.
The typical DVD contains 3 or 4 TV episodes,
on 3 or 4 separate VOBS. Each VOB is <= 1
gigabyte in length. So now you just feed your
[filanem].m2v files into the DVD authoring
program of your choice and design a menu and
burn the DVD. It's that simple.
---
Because the folks who put out commercial
DVDs of TV shows are such cheapskates, they
typically only include 3 TV episodes on each
DVD -- meaning at most 3 VOB files. You
don't have to worry about splitting or merging
the VOB files, since each one is a separate
TV episode and can be assigned its own button
on a menu.
If you've a mind to, you can get ambitious and
combine 4 TV show DVDs into 3 DVD-Rs by
putting 4 TV episodes on one DVD-R (each TV
show = 1 VOB <= 1 gig in length, and any
DVD-R will easily accommodate 4 gigs of data.)
Almost any common DVD authoring program
will handle this -- MyDVD, DvDIT! DVDLab,
Spruce, DVD Maestro, you name it. -
it use to be that way
but not any more
i have episode disc with as many as 13 or 14 episodes (good times)
i use to add tv episode at the end of my 2nd disc movies
episode are usually 22-25 minutes and
they are usually compressed
that don't equal 1,048,544kb (it did on the old uncompressed tv episodes however when you just had a few episodes)
that is a stardard vob file
about 11 or 12 months ago, i use to just rip my episodes in file mode with smartripper and i'd rename vobs and use ifoedit to create ifos then i would put mix/merge 2 episodes dvd to 3 discs as that would usally fit all the episodes uncompressed
well one time i mix/merge sanford and son with the jeffersons under the old rule of thumb (one episode=one vob)
well i was watching the finish mix discs and halfway though a show of the sanford & son, the jefferesons episode kick in.
after that i would preview my episodes discs vobs with power dvd and i realized that all new episodes discs, the show usually don't end at the end of the vob, the shows would stop at the 1,048,544kb mark, even if the show was at the beginning or the middle of the episode
so after that i would just break them down to one episode dvd to 2 discs -
I will try the method you suggested Vance, Im trying to backup my dvd of the series 24. each dvd has 4 episodes which are 1.8 gig each, so i figure i can only have 2 episodes on each. Do i have to work out the best split point? - not sure hoe i would do this?
Thanx for all your help so far guys.
