I bought Pinnacle Studio MovieBox USB yesterday since I can't find a local store that carry the Canopus ADVC 100.
I captured VHS using Studio8 (a software that came with the device). Captured it as MPEG2 using the SVCD template for like 30 minutes. I played the clip in the Edit section and there was no audio-video synch problem. Then I chose the Make Disc option and burned it onto a CD. When played on a DVD player, there is audio-video synch problem. I tried it on a couple different DVD players...still same problem.
So I thought I will use VCDEasy to burn it. When trying to import the file into VCDEasy a message as follow came up:
"This MPEG file have bad packets
bad packet at packet #173258 (stream byte offset 402651592) -- remaining 1592 bytes of stream will be ignored."
Also, if I tried to view the clip through Windows Media Player, the picture is a little jittering. I can't even open it with RealPlayer. It will give me an error. I also tried capturing it again with different time length - still no luck.
Here are a few questions:
* What cause the synch problem? The capture device or during the authoring and burning process?
* Why is the picture jittering when viewing with WMP?
* Why did VCDEasy gave me that error and what does it mean?
Please help.

Well the Canopus has audio & video inputs and can be set to locked so no A/V Sync problems.
Did you check for software & driver updates. Most hardware in the stores is out of date when you buy it due to the lags inherent in the distrubtion system. One benefit to the ADVC-100... No software to get out of date with it. The software I use with it I downloaded and paid for activation of, over the internet. IE, Scenealyzer Live, CCE Basic, TmpGenc, Ulead DVDMF2 etc.
If your Pinnacle has only video inputs and the audio is captured by the sound card then you will most likely suffer sync problems. I never had A/V be in sync all the time when I used the sound card to capture.
I wouldn't worry about the jittering in WMP, if it played without the jitter in the DVD player.
It sounds like it isn't creating standard Mpeg2 files?
You didn't say what software you used to cap?
Try capturing in (WinXp anyway) Microsoft Movie maker 2, It's been a while since I played with it, but it seemed fairly configurable. I recall being able to save as multiple formats so seemed flexible enough to me.
But since I now have the canopus I just use scenyalzer Live and convert with CCE basic from avi to DVD/VCD format.

TBoneit,
I'm still confused though...I captured the clip using Pinnacle Studio 8. Then I replayed the clip through this software and there was no audio-video synch problem. Only after I burned it onto a disk and viewed it on a regular DVD player, then boom there is the synch problem.
I think I'm going to return this Pinnacle unit and order Canopus since I have heard only good things about it. It was recommended to me by a few people from this forum on my previous post. It's just that I'm hestitating with ordering an expensive product online and only to find that it's not compatible with my system or have problems getting it to work. Returning products through online ordering is a pain...that's if I can even return it. Too bad the Best Buy store here doesn't carry it.
What capturing software do I need with Canopus? Can I use VDub? Is it true that Canopus does not capture in MPEG and only in AVI format? -
Correct me if I'm wrong people.
It's probably the software, try some other software and see if it works.
I use scenealyzer Live ($$)
There are some free s/w in the tools section that will work, I just liked the features of the Scenealyzer Live, including preview, pause, & Now Timer functions.
You need a firewire card for the ADVC-100
It captures in AVI, best for editing.
I just turned it on and picked Windows Movie maker 2 to capture with (Free from Microsoft, XP anyway I haven't looked in other versions) and it offers tons of capture options including AVI.
You should be able to use MM2 to capture, and edit.
Go lurk on the Canopus forums and read the messages there. I'm using WinXp Pro Sp1 myself with a cheapo SIIG firwire card, had to be sure and get one that wasn't a TI chipset.
I myseld use CCE Basic to convert to DVD specs ($$) again cause it's fast, links in the tools section.
Once again, pricey but read the reviews, I wasted more time & money on trying to be cheap, PCI Tuner cards, USB capture devices etc. Now I'm a happy camper with the Canopus.
Good Luck
