I've just seen an article in a magazine about this.
It is the panasonic DMR-E90H DVD Recorder which can record to HDD, DVD-RAM and DVD-R/W as many other recorders can. With an added bonus. The capability to record to MPEG4 through a built in codec!
Sadly it is only in Japan at the moment but is expected to be released elsewhere near the end of the year.
Sadly the only drawback is the price tag, expected to be a whopping £1,250.
The only link I could find is japanese:

Weird, a HR80, which means a 80 gig HD can be bought in the usa for about $525.00 Who needs mpeg 4 when it already makes dvd-rs? Someone here just renamed files to *.mpg
