This is not completely true. There are still VCR's that does have the TBC and other advanced features, but local retailers wont carry them because they are more expensive and most people arent willing to pay that kind of money for one. The only places where you will find these units is by online catalog or professional video stores that specializes in that kind of equipment (there are several). One catalog I have they still sell some of the S-VHS professional edit and recording decks with SMTPE timecode, TBC, and just about everything else you can think of. Even the prosumer models are still around. But the big difference here is price. I would simply forget about the local retailers like Best Buy and the others that simply wont carry stuff like that. Believe it or not, alot of production studios still uses SVHS for some of their production work.

  3. My Sony SL-HF900 and SL-HF2000 still record on a weekly basis. Onto Beta tapes, not VHS tapes. Long live Beta!

VHS will be ressurected. This I have forseen. :P

  5. VHS will die eventually but the time is still a little far off, I am afraid. There are millions of VCR's around and DVD has not penetrated some of the Far-East markets yet.

I think VHS will die suddenly when we get all the VCR facilities such as one-touch programming and recording and that at a low price. This may be available in a future technology. Three or four years ago people were saying that Plasma-TV will eventually wipe out standard TV, now they are saying the same about HDTV. But for any technology to die, the new bit has to offer:

    a) the same facilities
    b) significant advantages
    c) low/same price

At this moment DVD offers (b) to some extent and (c) but not everything. I think most will prefer to buy/rent DVD but stick to the good old VCR for recording.

I still got the Beta VCR and this is now mostly in use for the computer's video card so I can capture TV or old Beta tapes on the PVR.

The Beta movies are now mostly gone.

G_Shocker, you are right. The only reason people are still buying analogue camcorders(in rapidly decreasing numbers) is because of the price. Soon no manufacturer will bring in analogue cameras (into australia at least). Digital cameras kick arse!

  8. VHS wont die until you can record direct from a TV onto a DVD-R, and erase it/tape over it WITHOUT:

a computer working away, taking up vast amount of disc space
a vv expensive DVD player, with a hard drive in it!!!

however, that time isn;t very far away!

if someone gets their arse in gear, blu-ray will kick it.
If it's recrodable from the outset, and you can fit 5 or more hours of "DVD quality" video on there, it'll be a success. in the end.

  10. :P I dont think dvd recording will be mass market the costs and effort involved in making a hard drive recorder are plummetting and they will have all the advantages of Vhs without the tapes. think of a tivo with say a 400gb or a terabyte, or petabyte of storage. Its just around the corner in my opinion. personally I cant wait.
