  1. I've captured a few MPEG2 clips on my ATI AiW 9700 Pro with the following settings:

    - Video:
    -- 352 x 480 resolution, NTSC interlaced
    -- VBR, 8 Mbps Max, 4.77 Mbps Target
    -- GOP:
    * Closed
    * 4 P frames between I frames
    * 2 B frames between P frames
    - Audio:
    -- MP2, 192 kbps

    I took those clips straight to the TMPGEnc DVD Author and burned a DVD+R. The DVD plays fine on my PC with PowerDVD. But on my standalone Daewoo DVG-3000N player, the video playback is jumpy and far from smooth.

    Has anyone had similar issues? If so, is there a workaround?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Just as a follow-up, here's a previous set of settings that worked fine on my standalone player (with differences in bold):

    - Video:
    -- 352 x 480 resolution, NTSC de-interlaced
    -- CBR, 3.5 Mbps
    -- GOP:
    * Open
    * 4 P frames between I frames
    * 2 B frames between P frames
    - Audio:
    -- MP2, 224 kbps

    My gut feeling is still that the open vs. closed GOP might be the culprit, but for the sake of completeness I'm sharing all the differences I'm aware of. Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

  3. Check out the length of the GOP structure, the total lenght should not exceed 18 for NTSC and 15 for PAL. This *might* be a problem, although I'm not certain, but the DVD standard requires as above stated.

  4. I have had my share of problems in the past with leaving the GOP structure open on my CVD's that I later would burn to DVD. The previous poster is correct about the GOP length.

    I had a discussion with another poster about changing the structure to the 4,2 for GOP's vs closing the GOP. He said that I dont need to close GOP, but rather just make sure its set to 4,2 (he did say that he had to close GOP using TMPGENC - not dvd author, just TMPGENC the encoder due to a bug in the software), but that normally, you would have to do that.

    I still close my GOP's when I do my conversions and have not had a problem with any of my backups or caps. The only two things I could recommend is that you close the GOP and that to make sure that you are using 48mhz audio (for DVD compliance).
