  1. hi there everybody

a friend of mine borrow me the 4 ALIEN movies. they came all in a box celebrating the 20th aniversary of the first one.

as i love quality image i decided to post some questions so see if someone else as made any backyp of one of these movies.

the originals have, in my opinion, a low quality and that makes yet more difficult to get a nice backup.

I´ve already stripped down the movies to movie only with DVD2ONE so the numbers are about movie only plus audio 5.1 + 1 sub track.

So lets get to the numbers:

    Alien 1 - 5,09 Gb ( 15% of compression needed )
    Alien 2 - 5,95 Gb ( 27% of compression needed )
    Alien 3 - 5,20 Gb ( 17% of compression needed )
    Alien 4 - 5,31 Gb ( 18% of compression needed )

In my opinion anything beyond 15% if one tries to do the backup with DVD2ONE we get a image quality annoying since the surfaces for example seem to have a life of their own by flashing, moving, etc.

Since DVD2ONE didnt get me the results i wanted i moved forward INSTANT COPY, a little better i admit ( i did get 4,33 GB of target size on the first attempt ) but still not what i expected for.

I dont know if these movies have some trick, they seem to be Interlaced, which i think its not very common on PAL movies.

So to where i go from here? To TMGENC? To CCE?

Tell me about the way you made the ALIEN backup.

I have TMPGENC so i would give it a preference. Tried already to encode a small part of the ALIEN 1 movie to do a comparison with the result of DVD2ONE and DVDSHRINK , the surfaces look better but the image is not very crystal, it seems smoother but too much to my taste.

What are the best settings for TMPGENC 2.58.44.152 ?

I made the experience with CBR@4000kbs, video source 4:3, video setting 16:9 full screen , dc precision 10, normal quality motion search.

I will try now VBR 2 pass@4000kbs, high quality motion search to try to get a more crystal image.

Thanks in advance for your attention

    Best Regards

    digital

  2. I have'nt backup my alien box set, but i happen to think the quality is very good of the originals, dont forget the movies are old.First film 1979,second film 1986.There not gonna look a sharp and crisp as say star wars, matrix etc....

I would say use CCE , i would use 5pass', but every one has a different opinion on the number of pass'.

    Do NOT give warez.

Do NOT link to warez .

    Do NOT ask for warez.

Do NOT provide information how to obtain warez.

    Do NOT advocate warez.

    Warez includes pirate/bootleg movies.

    Hello.

btw, i'm guessing english isn't digital_EUR's primary language...as most foreigners say "borrow me" instead of "lend me"

Could be because the post was not addressed to you. The first is forum policy, the second is for my signature. Trying to run up the post count, huh?

Love vs. Hate, or read the rules, or else face the firing squad

hmm.., "..a friend of mine borrow me the 4 ALIEN movies.." and then,
"Tell me about the way you made the ALIEN backup.." shock:

Like, almost two years ago, one of my first rips was the first Alien movie
Well, there were a few others too hehe...

not really ... i hardly make any non-relavent posts...i'm sure you have many more posts in the off topic forum than me.

and...most importantly, you trying to be competitive...i was just asking a simple question regarding the emtions you used....don't need to get so defensive

i assume helping ppl is much more important than post count w/ u, but i could be wrong....
