  1. Hello everyone,

Basically my friend tells me that he cannot burn more than 120 minutes of video to his DVD-Rs while retaining top quality. Are there DVD-Rs which hold more than 120Minutes of video at top quality. possibly 140 Minutes.

It's kinda a waste to burn only 15 Minutes of video to a 2nd disc, ya know?

    Let me know, thank you.

what software is he using, and what steps is he taking?

many of the "do it all in one program" apps like NeoDVD only give you a bunch of fixed settings - so you are stuck with Good, Better, Best, and you can't adjust bitrate or audio encoding, etc.

If he's using one of those, I would suggest he break up his capturing, encoding and authoring steps among dedicated applications.

if he's using separate apps to do his projects, I would look at his settings - he can probably adjust his bitrate down a bit without sacrificing much quality, and fit more time in the desired file size. Or use VBR encoding as opposed to CBR - you allocate the bits to the scenes that need it, less bits to more static scenes, and end up with decent quality but a smaller file.

give us some more info on the process.

  3. Regarding "longer" discs:

Some material compresses better than others - for example, you may find you can really bump the bitrate down on animation and not notice a great deal of difference. I've seen in excess of 3 hrs on a DVD that was solely animation, a sort of Manga type promo of clips and the like, and it looked fine. An action movie with multiple soundtracks mean less "time" on the disc because the amount of data it can store is strictly limited. If you use that data up quickly, you get shorter playing times.

You can not buy longer DVD's like you can 21min, 74, 80, 90 minute plus CD-R's. Period.
