  1. My sincere apologies for spewage of posts. I am very new to DVD activities and also very enthusiastic about learning it. I spent almost a week just reading everything I could find on ripping and burning DVDs. Unfortunatly, it seems my experiences are rather unique.
In any case, here is what I have to date.
    The equipment:
    Win2K 2.8ghz P4 w/1 gig RAM
Radeon 9700 Pro w/ Dual Monitors
    Panasonic SW-19571 DVD Burner
Newer Model JVC DVD Player that does MP3, VCD, SVCD etc etc
    Older Model Phillips DVD/VCR Player

    The Software:
    DVDDecrypter
    DVD-Lab 1.2.2 Beta
    WinDVD
    PowerDVD

I have used a lot of other DVD Decrypt software, but Decrypter seems to be the best and most reliable.

    The Movies:
    A FEW GOOD MEN
    FINAL DESTINATION
    FINAL DESTINATION II

    The Media:
    Memorex DVD-R
    Memorex DVD-RW
    Maxwell DVD-R

OK, I have burned several movies from .ty files. TyStudio converts the .ty into .mpg and DVDLab imports them in beautifully. All have worked flawlessly.
When I go to rip purchased DVDs (see above), that's when I have problems.

I burned A FEW GOOD MEN onto a Maxwell DVD-R. It worked perfectly in my PC, and on both the Phillips and the JVC players. I burned FINAL DESTINATION & FD II and it doesn't work on my PC with either PowerDVD or WinDVD. WinDVD just freezes after the first second, PowerDVD pops up a box that says "Some Unknown Internal Error Has Occurred". But the movies WILL work on my older Phillips PLayer, but NOT on my newer JVC.
I am beginning to think the issue might be protection on the newer DVDs (FD1 & FD2) that is messing things up.
In any case, this outlines my process so far.

  2. You'll have to be more specific about your process. I doubt whether all of the three movies you mentioned is on a DVD5, so how are you compressing the movie down to fit?

Simply using DVDDecrypter will only give you the files ripped to your hard drive -- and you need to use it in the proper manner. Let's assume, though, that one of those movies IS a DVD5 and you ripped it properly (copied every single file to the hard drive using Decrypter in File mode). How are you burning it? You should just be dragging over the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders in Record Now in Data mode or, if you're using Nero, you need to do something else (sorry -- Nero confuses me but the experts here will tell you what to do).

Give us some more information and I'm sure we can help (I *sincerely* doubt if there's any "new" protection -- the movie studios have to make disks that will play on existing DVD players, and are thus stuck with the present system for the forseeable future).

    Thanx for the reply.

Here is my process.. I will do it with the movie THE MATRIX right now.

    1. Load THE MATRIX into my DVD burner. Open DVD DeCrypter, select FILE option, select only files for Movie and select One File only. Convert and Rip.

    2. This creates one small IFO file and one large VOB file (5.783G).

    3. I open DVD-Lab and IMPORT ASSETS the one large VOB File. Choose the ELEMENTAL STREAMS option. After 2-4 mins, I have 1 .mpv file (4.867G) and 3 .ac3 files. 1 5.1 Audio(394K) and two Dolby files(192K).

    4. I drag the .mpv and the 5.1 .ac3 files over to Movie 1. Do up some kewl menus (as an aside, I read where you can put movie scenes in a frame on the menu and have them rotate. Can't recall exactly how, or where I read it. Could you point me in that direction?) make the chapters and add the links necessary.

    5. Notice my movie is too large. Indicator at bottom right is red and says 5.24GB. Go to TRIM. Trimming seems to take an unusually long time.. I have a VTS .trim.m2v file that is now up to almost 10 Gigs?? Is that normal when only trimming like 294 Megs??

I'll send this now and then continue the process...

    Thank you once again, MK

You cannot rip just the movie..
EVEN IF YOU INTEND to BURN JUST THE MOVIE, you must rip all files to the hard drive then re-author (USING ONE OF MANY DIFFERENT POSSIBLE PROGRAMS)..
The reauthor aplication needs to use the other files you didn't get when you just ripped the movie

  6. Yes. Here's what I would (strongly) suggest you do: download DVDShrink 2.3. It is freeware, and will handle about 90% of what you are trying to do.

You don't need to use DVDDecrypter, as Shrink will also decrypt for you, but better than that it will fix the movie along with menu items you need (and you can eliminate what you don't). There is a great Shrink forum where the developer frequents that will help you further:

    http://forum.digital-digest.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=48

This should get you most of the way towards solving all your backup issues.
