Hello, and thanks for taking the time to read this.
I would say I am still quite new to all this (even though I have been reading a lot on vcdhelp.com and doom9) and still after many searches I cannot find the answer to my problem.
I have a Dell P4 2.53 that came from the manufacturer with a LTD163 DVD ROM. I have read that this DVD ROM is extremely well rated amongst users as one of the fastest DVD and most reliable readers. Unfortunately, mine seems to be locked at 2x (as most usually are, I have read) when using DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper (in File mode). I did some searching and found that I needed to upgrade the firmware. I upgraded to GDHJ from http://digi.web1000.com. No noticeable speed increase. I also found that I should delete the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in the Device Manager, which I did, but in vain (no luck). I also have ASPI layer 4.60 installed.
Could somebody help me reach a better speed than 2x? Is there anyone who also has a LTD163 who could help me?

Did Dell say it comes with the 163 drive or did you actually remove the case cover and confirm it's a 163? Could be Dell installed a different drive. Also in device manager does it show that DMA is enabled for the drive?

Thanks for the quick response -
Device Manager shows the drive as LITEON DVD ROM LTD163, and, I forgot to mention, DMA is enabled. -
Well that is a weird one. I have the 163 and on another system the 166 and both rip at speeds up to 15x for single layer DVD's. Is DMA enabled for your hard drive?

The only thing I can think to try would be to replace the IDE cable on the drive with a ATA66 cable if it's an ATA133 now or vice-versa. Also if the drive is set as a slave perhaps try making it a master or vice-versa. Finally maybe try another IDE channel.

I have the LiteOn LTD-163 drive and recently went from ripping speeds of up to 15.5x down to 2.1x
I found that the problem started for me when I installed dvddecrypter.. I had been using smartripper, but had a problem dvd (rip speed much slower than normal), so I thought I'd give dvd decrypter a try.. Big Mistake!!!! From that point on, I could only get 2x rips... I tried everything I could think of but nothing improved the rip speed. Fortunately I had made an Image of the hard drive only a few days before, so I restored the image... Only then was I able to get my rip speeds back to normal (7x-15x)... So I believe it has to be a windows registry setting or conflict.... -
My new burner was only ripping at 1X. After trying many different things that didn't work, I created a new partition and installed XP on it. When booting from that partition my rip speed when up to 4X. My regular partition boot partition has XP, but it also has a ton of other things on it.
