I need to defrag my hd. Maxtor 80gig. When i start the defragging (windows xp) it stops saying there are file allocation inconsistencies. Run chkdsk and run defrag again. When I run chkdsk, it finds no probs. but I still cant defrag. I really hope its not a physical problem. Has anyone had trouble like this and what should I do? What are some good diagnostic tools for XP?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

More than a week and no answers. Unusual.
Microsoft has always admitted that their defrag utility was not very good for NT, W2k, and, I would assume XP.
They have recommended Diskkeeper as a better utility. You can search for it in Downloads.com, probably be redirected, and sign up to DL Diskkeeper Lite, for free, or the Pro version, I think limited time trial, and, I think, reasonably priced.
Hope this helps. Heck, I hope you're still watching this thread.
