I still think for the sale price, the brand new Adaptec Videoh 2.0 USB will fit your needs perfectly.

$149 after rebate at Circuit City.

That it may be, but Skip has no desire to spend a bunch of $$$ NOR open their PC.

For me this (Videoh) does what I need it to do....I'm not looking to create a movie studio in my home. Just want to "backup" my DVD's (which it does with ease) and put some camcorder stuff on DVD.

Sorry some of us don't belong to the high end gang of tech gadgets.

The one you linked to is the one I bought then had buyers remorse...It includes the ability to connect a Directv or cable tv cable to it and record TV and use it like a Tivo. At first I thought it was a cool idea, then realized that I would never run cable to my PC (too far away from outlet) and I would need to much hard drive space to mess with it. I'm sure it's a great machine, but overkill for me.

I opted to just get the DVD one because I want to copy mine and friends wedding videos, baby videos etc to DVD. That and copy my movie DVD's.

No it's NOT Firewire...it's like the box says USB 2.0. Just plug the supplied USB cable to your USB plug on your PC (all PC's these days have them) and install the software (5 minutes at most to do) and you're on your way to burning.

Thanks to the folks here I learned to download DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink to backup my movie DVD's and I've already made a few backups without any real effort in the short amount of time I've owned it.

The VHS copy of Office Space I transfered to DVD (using the Sonic MyDVD software that comes with the Adaptec) looked amazing and was very simple to do. Just click a few buttons and go eat lunch...everything is done automatically for you for the most part.

Hey it may be low-key for many folks here, but for some folks like me, it does a great job.

If you get it at Circuit City they have a generous return policy if you don't like it.

Grab one while they still have the rebate!

  9. I've heard many things about Analouge capturing devices and I have to say I heard the best things from the Canopus device suggested above. If you do not go with that, look at the Pinnacle Moviebox USB. I can help you with this if you like.

Do NOT consider buying this unless you live in Europe. Its uses PAL format, not NTSC (North American standard for video resoultion).

    @ Coupgrade

does this dazzle thing have good quality?
what is the price and do u thing that it is sold at best buy, maybe?

    @ everyone

i really appreciate everyones input and so far i have really been impressed with these two items:
    1) Pinnacle Studio MovieBox USB
    2) Adaptec VideOh! DVD Media Center

but before i buy i want to be sure so i was thinking like we could have a vote. so post your votes and if you could, tell me why you would prefer the cetain product. also if you can introduce a new product, i will do some research on it and if i like it. i might include it as well into the poll.
so remember, just vote (example: Number 1 because it is User friendly)

Considering there aren't many of us "Videoh/Dazzle/Pinnacle" capture device folks around here, I think the time has come to forgo the whole asking for a vote etc. and going to BB or Circuit, buying one of the two listed, trying it out for the weekend, then if you don't feel it meets your needs, take it back and try the next one.

You're gonna end up beating a dead horse by asking a million questions about these gadgets.

Now get on your way to BB!!

    TGIF everyone !!

    Hi skip2mylou..

Listen.. I'm sure it's ben posted here before. But, you have two basic
    choices.

    A - Hardware MPEG (pref. MPEG-2) or,
B - Hardware assisted device ie, DV (ie, ADVC-100)

Listen, I can't tell you what to buy, or what's my experience is like either,
cause in the long run, it all boils down to your skills level and your patiance
    and other things.

I can tell you this, that i've tried MANY video cards of the likes, and you
can do a search here on vhelp and whatnots. I've ben there (and further)
and back, and in the long run (in brief) just get the ADVC-100, and add
your name to the list on the capture card page. "I should've done it a long
    time ago" etc.

I'm not saying that DV is the greatest quality, but it's the best there is when
you compare or add up all the ups/downs w/ all the other various cards out
there. I've already helped a few w/ getting the ADVC-100. And, they do
thank me. Not that I need it, mind you. Cause I don't work for them
But, I can do zillions of start and stop DV captures (transfers, that is) when
I'm watching my Satellite tv. I tell you.. me and my DVIO app, and we are
    always making beautiful music together

I have windows 98, so I have the FAT32 issue to worry aoubt (not) but since
most of my video projects are TV based, I learned to stop during the commercials and then, later on, I just join all the .AVI files and
    encode them.

You still have to learn a few things no matter what (if you're a newbie to
all this) but the DV is the best thing to get - bar none. You get consisant
results every time. 720x480, 48k audio (dvd anyone ? ) and a few other
niceaties. It's a short learning curve, once you get stated w/ the above
    device though.

Wow, lots of things to talk about here. Anyways, I just wanted to share
w/ you some of my past expeirences and knowledge and WISDOM.
GET THE DARN "ADVC-100" and be DONE with IT!! hehe

You wont regret it !! ..Bar None !!

    Have a great weekend,

  15. I agree with vhelp. I use a digital camcorder with a passthrough feature (which is similar) and it has worked very well. No dropped frames are out of sync issues.

Skip does not want to open his/her computer, period. A lot of people don't.
So, why has no one mentioned finding the card at BB or CompUSA or somewhere, taking th box there, and, as the signs all over their shelves advertise, pay 29 bucks to have it installed, professionally, I do believe they install the software, also, so one less hassle.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but do not ALL devices capture in digital format? I've never seen any files on my drives that are pictures. If you could look at the file at machine level, they'd be 0's and 1's.

Now, converting to an MPEG will probably result in a smaller DIGITAL file, but still digital. I know most of you guys prefer DV as pure DV, and convert after, with full control. Fine by me. I don't think Skip is ready for this.

There was a thread here not too long ago re: the Plextor card, bragging about Hardware MPEG encoding. Go to the site linked a few above and read carefully. It is MPEG4 hardware only, 1 and 2 are software encoded.

The AIW is software, and from some of the posts does a good job, and Lordsmurfs guide is specifically written for it. I don't have one, I'm using an MSI card, but, MPEG 1, 2, and 4 aside, it won't do avi.

Skip, look at the back of your machine for ports that are tombstone shaped, about a quarter inch wide, half inch long, two corners knocked off one end. They're Firewire.

thanks for the heads up man. u r very humorous, i had a few laughs reading your post. i also was considerin the ACDV-100 but if i had gotten your post earlier i would have bought it cause had just gone to best buy to buy a Pinnacle Studio Moviebox USB. but if i am not satisfied with the one i have got, i might just follow your advice so thanks again. have a good weekend.

    @gmatov

u r absolutely right i am a newbie so i wanna start off slow, if i am not satisfied i will probably follow your guys' directions. and thanks for the thing about the firewire that is what i needed to know.

    @everyone

for now i am following coupgrade's advice which s to take it step by step and do the trial and error thing.
once again i cannot thank the people who have answered my post enough so thanks for really helpin me out and i am gonna try the Moviebox thing i bought and let you people know how it turned out.

P.S. does anybody know how to ge the commercials out of my captured video? thanks.

Virtualdub. its great and free. just load the video, select the beginning of the commercial break and the end and delete. do that throughout the video and then just frameserve to your encoder.

    hi skip2,

    Tools

Just follow the links when you click the Download button. If you have a
Pentium, D/L the one that that one, else D/L the all else.

Note, if you go to Virtualdub's SourceForge website for the D/L's there is
also some notes on optimization.. for advance users, but can't hurt to have
a look anyways.. no all newbies are dummys :P

    welp, enjoy,

I agree the standalone works the quickest and really the easiest.
I have personally done many of these all with success.
the only issue is once i make a copy on the standalone i can not copy these dvd to give to other family members. when i go to copy in dvd xcopy or x copy express it comes up as this dvd does not have a VIDEO_TS.IFO file
    any one with a sugestion.
Yes i am closeing it when done but have not locked it
    thanks
