  1. This is probably a silly question, but I am pretty clueless with the VOB files. I want to take an existing DVD, rip it to my hard disk, then convert the movie back to an MPEG. How would I do this?

    Thanks in advance.

    DVDdecrypter(rip it) --> DVD2AVI ( extract audio) ---> TMPGenc ( encode to mpeg.

    Done.

    "Easier" way:

Use Ulead DVD Movie Factory. It has a conversion button exactly for this.
    Faster too.

Depends what you want to do with it, if you just want 1 large mpeg file then you could rip with Smartripper (set 'File Splitting' to 'Max Filesize' and adjust the max file size amount to 9000mb - this is on the 'Settings > Movie' screen).

When the rip is complete find the VOB file and change the extension to mpg.

You will need your drive formatted for NTFS for this to work (due to filesize).

    No need to encode - It's already mpeg2 !
    There's lotsa ways.

rip the video out with vobedit - makes one m2v file out of
    a whole set of VOBs

rip AC3 audio out with vobedit

rip MP2 audio out with DVD2AVI

then re-mux to a MPEG2 with tmpgenc or whatever.

  7. I found out this and it is not so difficult as you think.
Rename the file.vob to file.mpg and voila.
You can use it in your authoring program.

  8. Hello There !
I must give some comment on this thread.
The methods to convert a VOB to a MPG all have one problem. The MPG file has the audio coded in AC3, and there are very few program authoring program that accept AC3 sound.
The method with DVD2AVI also reencode the stream and that sometimes decrease the picture quality.
So to get a MPG file that all authoring program accept ypu have to convert the AC3 file and then mux.

  9. Any conversion of the AC3 file will result in sound degradation -- you can't take a lossy compressed file of *anything* and translate it without losing more.

My advice would be to use an authoring program that *can* use AC3, like the excellent DVDLab (less than $80, with a fully functional 30 day trial). You can't go wrong with it.

Also AC3 can be used in:
TMPGDVD author and DVD Architect (you said DVD LAB also)

Don't use MY DVD or PINNACLE authoring and you can use your renamed file.

You can use dvd2avi and under one of their menu's you cand "decode to wav". Now you can use the file in tmpgenc to convert to a mpg.
