I have a Sony DRU-510A housed in an external USB 2.0 case. Has anybody tried to flash the firmware over the USB connection? Or should I play it safe and remove the drive from the external case and attach it to an IDE connector to flash the firmware?
All replies are appreciated, but I would especially like to hear from those with real experience doing this. The risks is too great to rely on theoretical answers or speculation! Thanks.

i think so, you can flash it in a firewire case which is almost the same thing.

I have flashed my Memorex external drive through firewire several times.
I know its not the Sony you asked for but since nobody answered.... -
Thanks for your replies. I'll give it a go, unless someone posts a negative experience!

DRU-500 in external USB flashed no prob.
The USB or Firewire chipset acts just like a standard IDE controller, you should be fine.
