  1. iKlEiTlH,

Install the ATI DVD software 4.1 even if you do not have a DVD-ROM in your system. I have heard many times that installing it fixes a number of capture problems. My break out bock works fine for sound now and although I'm not sure if its because of installing the DVD software it just might be.

As far as your sound quality when going directly into your sound card - it should not affect quality. The AIW simply passes the sound to the sound card through either internal or external cables. Its a simple pass through. As a matter of fact the quality theoritically could be better because by going straight to the sound card you are eliminating the pass through and any potential noise involved.

  2. iKlEiTlH,

I'm not as up to speed on problems in Windows 98 as I am in Windows 2000 so you would be much better off asking your question on a site like http://www.rage3d.com which specializes in ATI products.

The recommendation from "next" about the DVD 4.1 is very important that software being installed clears up several MPEG2 and other issues with the RADEON.

    Good Luck

  3. What do you use to edit your mpeg1 file? Are you using TMPG? I use the same method you use, but I get audio sync problems after I edit with TMPG.

    Part I The basic

I have made some VCDs and SVCDs with my ATI AIW card, from what my eyes tell,
when doing DVD backups, the resulting quality really rivais TMPGEnc or CCE.
I don't want to say the quality is better, since it's a personal taste. But
I'm pretty sure most of us would satisfied with the quality, especially when
you can do so with so little time compare to YUV2---TMPGenc routing.

I didn't do much with homemade video or video from other sources, so what I'll
describe bellow only for your reference.

Like some posts pointed out, we should specify ATI configration when bring up
this topic. So let me put down my system info here first. BTW, I'm pretty sure
if you ATI card (regrardless its model #) can use the same driver vertion and
MMC vertion, my method will work.

    CPU: 800MHz PIII
    MB: SuperMicro BX440 Slot 1
    Memory 256MB PC100
    Hard Drive: 20 GB WD 7200 RPM---for system, 2 X 10GB Maxtor 7200 RPM Raid--for
    capturing video.
Video: ATI AIW 128 Pro 32MB AGP
Video Driver: ATI display driver 6292
    MMC Version: ATI MMC 6.3
CD-R/RW: Teac Velo CD 8x4x32 (VCD/SVCD alwaye done at 8X speed)
VCD/SVCD software: Nero Burning ROM 5.5

Standalone DVD Player: Apex AD600A, Apex 703

I always have a feeling that LSX MPEG Encoder (and Gomotion Realtime Encoder) has
being overlooked by many of us, my method confirmed that at least LSX Gomotion
    can delieve great quality.

Some of you may know that, for comparing VCD/SVCD quality, you really need watch
it on the TV set, watch them on PC screen won't let you make a good judgement.

Also I'd like to point out that, generally speaking, I don't believe burning
speed would have any impact on the quality of VCD/SVCD. We need to remember that
it's a digital recording process. On the other hand, I do believe CD media brands
and/or DVD player brands/Models will have major effects on playback quality.
Why? Because different CD blank has slight differ laser beam reflection parameters,
and different DVD players have different laser pich-up mechanism, and they ability
to pick up laser beam signal at certain bandwidth would differ, let alone the
    firmware capacity.

  4. Hi Next,
I followed exactly your step to hack into registry and also set the bit rate to 22.5Mb/s. I could capture without a single frame drop (wonderful). Here are some problems:

    1. the sound turned out to be so horrible. Is there a ratio or relationship between bit rate and sound or motion estimate and sound ? Motion estimate was at 98. line sound rec level input is set at middle.

    2. When I tried to drop the 450MB MPEG-1 into Nero, it was not seeing it as a compliant VCD. Nero said this is MPEG-2 format instead of MPEG-1. How can I fool Nero like you did ??

I'm kinda new to this so any help would be great.
