Hello, im new to all this but im desperate to know if i can burn a film onto disc to play in my new dvd player (which does play all types -vcd etc) using only a CD-Re-Writer?? (As i dont own a DVD ReWriter)i've tried creating a video cd using nero but it doesnt burn the disc properly. Is this because im doing something wrong? it is impossible to do? or is it because the film i am trying to burn onto vcd is saved on a data cd - will this affect the file from burning? PLease please pleaseeee help, thanks lynsey xXx

Try and be more specific on your source data.
What is the file structure of the disc you have ?
What format / file extension is on the data disc you have.
If it is something like avesqXXX.dat then use vcd gear to convert it to mpeg.
Are you taking the video cd template say in Nero ?

I'm a complete know-nothing at this, but I managed to use Nero 5.5 to create a Video CD on a normal CD rewriter, just following the instructions in Nero. I had a Mpeg1 file already, but I'm sure it can do it from an avi file or files. I can't remember the exact details, but it was so easy, I just asked to create a VCD, and there it was, done, and it played on the Sony DVD player, no problem.

Nero can create VCD's from AVI files by doing the encoding and authoring and burning itself. But this is far from the best solution for creating VCD. Nero is not a good encoder and you will get much better results by using a decent encoder such as TMPGEnc. You can then use Nero to author and burn your VCD.

Also, you said it didn't burn the disc properly. How so? Because it didn't play in a stand-alone player? Some players do CD-R but not CD-RW, some do only CD-RW, some do both.

Hi, Thanks for all ur help so quickly. I will try to xplain more in depth what the problem is. I have an .avi file (well 2 halfs of a video and i know that i will need to burn half on one disc and half on the other so that isn't where im going wrong). I'm using Maxell 700Mb/80min disc, is this the problem, do i need special discs? I put one of those into my cd-rewriter drive and went to nero. I then clicked the VideoCd button and it led me to find the file that i wanted to burn after choosing the writing speed etc, i then inserted my data cd (Which i created by simply using the "Create Cd" program that i got with my Freecom Cd-ReWriter, i then chose data cd and selected both halves of my film to be writen onto the disc to save space on my computer then deleted the files off my computer as when i insert the data cd i can double click the files and they play fine) so after choosing the first half of my video nero accepted this and went to the burning stage, it then take about 4 seconds before saying it had completed which i then put it in the dvd player and it couldn't load the disc. The DVD player says on the top that it plays - dvd, vcd, cd-da, cd-r/rw, mp3, jpeg picture and cd playback. So the dvd player should play the disc therefore it must have been a burning error as it only took 4secs to burn. any more information needed, just ask.

Very confusing!
First, you said you clicked the VideoCD button, and got the file.
Then you said you put in the "Data CD" that you created using the "Create CD" option????
You do one or the other. If you create a data CD, that is not playable in (most) DVD players!
You have to select Video CD. Tell it what the file is, and then burn that onto a blank CD.
There is still no guarantee that that will play on your DVD player. You have to be sure that your player supports VCD (most do) as well as supports your media CD-R/CD-RW. -
The way you write your post makes it difficult to understand but I think that you are saying you have 2 avi files on a cdr that you are trying to convert to vcd.
Firstly you will have to copy them back to your hard drive before you can convert them to vcd compatibe mpg's as this can't be done straight from your cdr.
Get the demo of TMPGENC from the tools section here, it's free and the vcd file creation part works without any limitations.
Start tmpgenc and from the wizard select pal vcd as you are in the uk. Click next and browse for the avi file now on you hard drive.
click next, next, next and give your output mpg file a different name to your avi to avoid confusion.
Click ok and create file ok and watch it convert to vcd compliant mpg.
When finished start nero, close the wizard and from the left pane scroll down and double click video cd. Choose encoding resolution pal. Select speed and click NEW.
Browse on the right to your new mpg file and drag it to the bottom left pane. Nero will check for compliancy after which you insert a new blank cdr in your burner and click the burn button (top centre) . Nero now burns you a vcd which as you say should play in your dvd player. -
@LynzUk,
sorry if i missed out on something....i'm too tired and tend to lose attention reading big, long paragraphs
anywayz, you shouldn't just load the .avi files into nero.... you need to convert those .avi files into MPEG-1 .mpg files first. then, you can load those into nero.

hello again,
I'd just like to thank everyone who replied to my message, i know im confusing thats because i dont know a lot about computers at all and dont know the lingo! so sorry about that! thanks to the person who gave me the long detailed account of how to convert and burn, i followed it all and managed to get it to burn the disc however it was only the sound of the film! this is because TMPGEnc wouldn't let me add my films in the part where i browse for my file and would only let me but it in the audio part. I then tried a different short .avi file which it accepted as a film, therefore i am very confused as to why my films aren't accepted by TMPGEnc, something to do with it not being supported came up, so thanks anyway but i think its time to give up with those files as they aren't seen to be valid .avi files .....i think! any more suggestions welcome otherwise thanks and goodbye to this topic! -
heres the solution to TMPGEnc not accepting file types: in the menu of tmpgenc click options>environmental settings then click on the vfapi plugin Tab and increase direct show multimedia filereader to a priority of 1 or higher if 1 does not wrk, that should be ur problem sorted
