  1. Greetings

Another newbie here. I have had a look through old topics but cannot find the subjects I need help with but please excuse me if they have been talked about before.

I have a G4 with Superdrive and also a standalone Panasonic DVD recorder.

    1) The discs I make on the standalone can be played on all my DVD players, the kids G3 iMacs and my wife's G3 PowerBook but not on my G4 running in 10.2.1. I can however play them if I reboot in System 9. I've tried to update all software that could be relevant but to no avail...any thoughts?

    2) More usefully would be if anyone knows of software that converts my homemade DVDs back into a format that can be edited. Having written a DVD of some old analogue camcorder footage on my standalone I would now like to extract it onto the computer to do some editing and maybe make some fancier menus before writing a new version of the DVD using the Superdrive.

    Thankyou for your time

strange. do the disks mount? If so, does apple dvd player load? If not, how come you are not updaing past 10.2.1? Perhaps apple dvd player has been updated since 10.2.1

Since it works in OS9, id say something is going on with your OSX. Suggest updating first, 2nd would be to reinstall apple dvd player (get the app off apple? or your restore disks) and 3rd would be to reinstall your system.

The problem is that these disks are not playing on your mac, so editing them will be difficult. the DVD ripping programs all require apple dvd player to load before the disk can be ripped. Does apple dvd player even load?

if so, and the disk mounts, you can just drag the VIDEO_TS folder off it to the desktop. You now have the dvd on your HD.

1st, id drag one of the large 1gig .vob's to video lan (www.videolan.org) which is a all around wonderful player. It will play any .vob you drag onto its icon.

Now, it depends on what type of editing you want to do. What do you want to edi? cut, move, add portions? Make it something other than DVD?

more info please. specifically details on what happens when you put the dvd in your G4. What type of drive do you have? etc.

A ripping program only requires Apple DVD Player (or VLC) to open the disc in order to make the encryption key accessible to the ripper. Since you want to take material from discs you made in your standalone Panasonic recorder, a ripping program isn't needed since these discs are not encrypted with CSS.

So basically all you need is for the DVD to mount in Finder, which it seems to be doing. From there, just drag the VIDEO_TS folder (or it's contents) from the mounted disc to a folder in Finder, to get them copied.

To do the best editing, you'll need to convert these MPEG-2 files to a Quicktime friendly codec -- Using the highest quality codec, like the DV one, will allow you to do more precise editing in Premiere 6.5, or Final Cut Pro 3 (or others I'm not familiar with).

Your most flexible menuing options will come via DVD Studio Pro. DVDSP should allow you to burn your re-edited, menued project back to DVD.

  4. Sorry, not sure how to make a difference between quoted and my own text....

DVD icon comes up but DVD player doesn't start. When the icon is double clicked there is nothing in the folder. If I start up in 9 then DVD player starts automatically and on opening the folder you see all the usual VIDEO_TS, VOBs and BUPs. In 10.2.1 I have no problem seeing and playing prerecorded DVDs and any DVD-Rs I have made with the Superdrive it's just those made on the standalone that it cannot deal with. I use the same brand of media in both. I will have another go at updating.

The problem is that these disks are not playing on your mac, so editing them will be difficult. the DVD ripping programs all require apple dvd player to load before the disk can be ripped. Does apple dvd player even load?

I can get the VIDEO_TS folder onto the HD when I am in 9 so that is what I have been doing. Once it's on the HD I can go back to 10.2.1 and play it from the HD and also write a new DVD which will then work everywhere. What I need to know is how can I convert those files in the VIDEO_TS folder back into something that iMovie or Final Cut can deal with? After editing I would then put it back into iDVD or DVDStudioPro before writing another DVD. I'm probably not explaining myself very well!!

Thanks for the speedy responses so far
