I've been using DVDx for a wkile but I want 2 try another progs.
I've tried TMPG and the quality is good but it takes ages to make the conversion.
CCE is a lot faster but quality isn't as good as TMPG's (Am I using the wrong quality settings)
MainConcept is just c**p!
Is there a prog with quality results as good as TMPG's but faster or
TMPG is the only way to go for h-quality vcd and svcd?

Well you're making a good choice leaving DVDx, it is a poor quality encoder. I use TMPGenc, it's slower, but quality is more important to me than speed

TMPG shouldn't take ages. If youa re not runing at least a 2.4 Ghz P4, you can get a barebones one for less than $300. Trust me, you'll thank yourself if you do a lot of video work.
Also check your TMPG settings.
I do TMPG encoding at 3 basic settings. The first setting is 2-pass VRB 200 min 6000 av 8000 max and gives me about 100 minutes of video on one DVD-R. This takes about 3.5 hours of TMPG for each 45 minutes of video in. That's about 7 hours to encode the video for one DVD. That's a while, but it's not forever. I queue up the processing so it batch encodes overnight while I'm alseep, and I encode at least 2 hours per day, often more. (Today I encoded 5 hours of source, or rather, still am and will be for the next 18 hours.)
The second encoding method is a LOT faster. Use CBR 800 and TMPG encodes at only 2x real time with a P4 2.4 That's pretty fast. You can encode 4 or 5 hours overnight. Yeah, you only get about 60 minutes per DVD, but what the heck, it's really fast.
The other setting is low res for cartoosn and the like, min 0 av 3000 max 4500. Goes about 2.5 times real time, produces fine resutls for lo-res source mateiral like old B&W sitcomes or old cartoons.
Things to speed up TMPG:
Turn frame preview OFF
Do NOT use noise reduction settings, do that in VirtualDub or AviSynth, much faster and better reuslts
Do NOT set MOTION ESTIMATION to anything higher than HIGH qulaity (best is overkill, I can't see a difference and it makes encoding time explode by a factor of 10).
If you don't have a dedicated standalone comptuer to do video encoding and DVD burning, get one. They're cheap. We're talking less than $180 for a barebones Athloon 2000 XP. -
TMPGENC is the best, upgrade your pc.
