    OEM = Original Equipement Manufacturer

    These usually come in very spare packaging. I think they are individual components that are sold to computer manufacturers or builders. They don't come in the retail package like you would buy in a store. I have bought several items like this (most recently SONY DVD+RW/DVD-RW drive) and have never had a problem with them. They are usually sold at a better price than the retail packages.

  3. Also, investigate the waranty period as well. I know with some hard drives that I've bought in the past, that a retail box version you get a 3 year warranty, and with an OEM you get a 1 year.

    If ever in doubt always ask questions from the people you are buying from.

  4. don't think that OEM is in anyway inferior to retail packaging...it's basically the exact same thing as the retail version, but basically just less of the bells-and-whistles...

    i.e. less warrenty, less support, crappier packaging, less software, no cables, no instructions manual, no blank DVD-R, etc...

    but it's cheaper thou...

  5. In a nutshell, if you are able to fix most of your computer problems without calling a help desk, then you should have no worries about OEM.

    If you struggle when things go wrong, you may want to stick with retail as you will get the support and warranty. Or if you want the included software.

  13. i bought the optorite dd0203 but im new to this and have a couple of questions.
    why did it not have a driver with it? what is firmware?
    i think i have installed the driver using dvd2flash but when i use nero (5.5.7.8) and try to burn it says, save image file.
    also when i choose recorder it says image file and not optorite.
    i can burn dvds with moviefactory but it wont burn dvd rw.
    i know i'll get there eventually but could use some help.
    thanks
