I have a couple of AVI files that I would like to convert to SVCD. When I try this in TMPGEnc I am informed that the evaluation period of the MPEG2 encoder has expired. Can I install a free MPEG2 encoder that will run in TMPGEnc or do I have to pay the $99 for the pro version. Alternatively, are there any other free program that will do what I want. I'm not being a cheap skate but I begrudge paying $99 for something that I may use only once or twice.

    Thanks

You have to pay if you want to use tmpgenc mpeg2 encoder. Or you can use bbmpeg, free mpeg2 encoder.

Thanks for the reply. Just exactlty how do I go about using the bbmpeg encoder? Do I just download it and TMPGEnc will automatically find and use it, or do I use it in some other program? Sorry if this sounds rather basic but I am a bit green.

Edit: I have downloaded the bbmpeg encoder and it is pretty self explanitory. One thing has confused me though: how can I encode the sound at the same time as the video? in TMPGEnc you can choose the video and audio source files but this doesn't seem to be available in the bbmpeg2 program.

  4. hrm....i remember there were threads here on how to get around the MPEG-2 expiration problem...but maybe with earlier versions. i have a really old version of tmpgenc in which the MPEG-2 support doesn't expire...and is completely free.

you could try doing a search on "tmpgenc" and "registration" or something like that...

    --------

you could be able to get another version of tmpgenc...or just maybe re-install the one you have and MPEG-2 should reset itself...of course, it'll expire again, but at least you can use it now.

    --------------

otherwise, for BBMPEG, you can use external audio encoders (i.e. BeSweet or ToolLame): https://www.videohelp.com/tools.php#Audio%20Encoders

you can use those external encoders to encode .wav to MPEG-1 Layer II audio and then mux the encoded video and audio together with tmpgenc's MPEG TOOLS

  5. Try DVDx. It encodes to vcd, avi, and svcd. It is also freeware.
