Hello everybody,
I am backing up my old family VHS tapes.
I have a DV/AV twins capture card and I capture with Pinnacle Studio 8.
I capture about 1 hour of video and the final AVI file is completely out of sound synchronisaton. (either with scene detection or not in Studio 8).
I tried a capture with Ulead Video Studio provided with the DV/AV card and there the resulting avi file is perfect.
But.... I can’t open the avi with Studio 8 (and I like Studio 8 for DVD authoring)
Does someone has an idea on how to solve this issue ?
Thanks

61 views and no responses yet...well I won't pretend I have the answer but let me throw something out there for you and see if helps...perhaps you have a type 1/2 problem - I do have S8 and thought it can only read type 2...I don't have the ulead s/w but maybe it is putting out type 1...there is a converter on the tools page
DV Type 1 to DV Type 2 Converter
Click tools on the left-hand frame of this site and click the codecs section...then find that tool...
obviously you need to be careful - I don't know what OS you are but if you can create a checkpoint or have config safe you can back up your registry before you install (is that meaningful to you?).
anyway, this is just food for thought - maybe it will spur some ideas...good luck -

Studio has masssive sound/video sync issues when capturing anything other than DV (for me anyway).
I captured 30 minute's of footage with Studio and it was all out of sync, yet when I captured with Virtualdub it was perfect.
I then import back into Studio for editing and then save as an avi (I prefer TMPGEnc for encoding over Studio).
Don't forget your source is a major factor with audio/video sync issues, the worse the quality of the source the more likely the chance of audio/sync issues and dropped frames (although with Vdub it has automatic sync correction).
Try Vdub, it's free and superb.

Amen to that, Bill.
However, VirtualDub doesn't work well with WDM drivers, which are now the only drivers available for the most recent cards and Windows XP.
AV capture with Studio will only work properly if you use Pinnacle hardware. I believe that's a deliberate decision from Pinnacle either because of technical (support) problems or commercial reasons. DV capture is different because of the DV format, I guess. I capture DV with Studio using a non-Pinnacle IEEE1394 card and it works OK (except I can't use my IEEE1394 drive ...) -

I would like to add some comments because I didn’t sat in front of my screen waiting for the miracle solution from the net.
Daves : I have downloaded the DV1/DV2 codec and will give it a try
I have already created a restore check point to be safe.
Alkendathu : I am using AMD Athlon 2000+ Windows XP – 256 Mb RAM – As mentioned in my first post I have a DV/AV twins capture card (IEEE 1394 not from Pinnacle)
I have captured some video from a DV camcorder with Studio, authoring to DVD with nice menus, and everything is perfect. My only problem is AV (and I would like to keep souvenirs of my kids when they were small-DV didn’t exist yet....).
Let’s hope for a quick patch
Will Hay : I tried a capture with Virtualdub but I got an error message prior to start capture :
Error 419 : Impossible to open sound peripheral (I have a Hercules sound card that works well with Pinnacle Studio or Ulead)
I e-mailed Virtualdub and waiting/expecting some support – unless one of you can...
Furthermore, I captured with virtual dub on a friend’s machine and all was OK except that always this impossibility to import the resulting avi file in Studio8 (same as with Ulead avi file). The image is composed of purple and green vertical striped that cannot even be displayed on the “TV screen” of Studio.
I am loosing my latin.
If I have no other solutions, I will stick to the stupid following method.
Capture 10 minutes sequences at a time with Studio and then recompile a whole file.
All that in the 21st century.
Thanks and Regards from a Sunny Belgium. -
Daves,
Just tried to capture 30s. of VHS tape with Sudio 8 and Ulead Studio.
I tried to test the DV1/DV2 tools and it ccame out that both avi are of the same type (2)
Thanks -

Also, what codec did you use to capture the AVI at your friend's house ?
if it wasn't MMJPEG you may want to try that again using an MMJPEG codec. -
Hello,
I tried the Morgan m3jpeg codec for capture in Virtualdub.
The importation of the .avi file in Studio8 is still impossible.
Does anybody which is the right codec for capture that allows future exploitation of the movie with Pinnacle Studio8 ?

Perhaps I can add a little here. I am a big fan of PS8. (Waits till the boos subside). If treated right, PS8 works fine, and does not lock up.
That being said, allow me to continue. I capture tons of VHS/SVHS and 8mm using PS8. My secret...The Canopus ADVC-100. This is one amazing tool. I hook up my source, start PS8 capture, start the tape and voila, perfect captures every time. Never a dropped frame, never out of sync audio.
Yes the ADVC-100 is just under $300. but it is an investment that was well worth it for me.Burn Baby Burn
