hrm...there are competing formats for "blue" as well.....blue ray vs. blue laser

  7. I agree we need another option. Neither. Also, Blue Ray(Laser) computer writers will not be seen until 2007. These formats will be around for at least another 7 to 10 yrs.

  11. No format ever wins. Next year you'll be asking which Blue laser drive is the best, Sony or Toshiba. Remember, the computer and consumer electronics industry wants in your wallet every 18 months, just like the auto industry wants in your wallet every 7 years. That is their master plan. Prepare your wallet for 2006, your going to need it to be very fat!

  12. If the DVD RW alliance doesn't crack down and put their little bitsetting hack in all drives (especially the dual-format burners - ie. Sony 510 etc.) then everyone will soon see drops in DVD+R incompatibility.

HP dvd200i was probably one of the most popular DVD+R drives out. Others were based on same Ricoh hardware, which allows bitsetting. Now many, like myself, are buying dual-format recorders only to find that they don't set the book type to DVD-ROM for DVD+R media. For me, this caused incompatibility with 3 devices which I own (Xbox with Samsung drive, Toshiba SD5109 and a Compaq notebook). I bought a new Toshiba SD3900 DVD player, a firmware upgrade fixed my notebook (was very difficult to flash though - average person wouldnt be able to) but my Xbox remains incompatible. This opened my eyes and my choice is clear - use DVD-R media from now on. It is still handy to have DVD+RW though for testing authored DVDS and backing things up etc. because it is better and faster than DVD-RW. I look forward to 4x DVD+RW media.

How many others have switched from DVD+R to DVD-R because of this?

Not another format war. frankly, i hope they both coexist as this encourages competition and keeps price of the media down.

  19. Couldn't give a damn. Ihave -, but in a year that will be replaced. No-one will win this year (if ever) so what does it matter? I'll just buy what I think looks shiniest each year.

Put a blue LED in the drives, then that one wins. Whichever it is.

Ability to change the booktype is the main reason I won't switch from DVD+R to DVD-R

Quote news from Doom9 from 7/31/03:

It's not exactly new, but interesting nonetheless: CDR-Info has conducted a rather extensive DVD recordable compatibility test. DVD-R/W comes off as a little more compatible than DVD+R/W. But while we're on the subject, I was in a CD/DVD manufacturing plant last week and was given a tour by their chief of technology. On the subject of the two DVD formats, he told me that he'd be glad if DVD-R/W disappeared, as it's more complicated (and thus expensive) to manufacture, while at the same time, competition leads to lower prices than for DVD+R/W media.

Put your glasses on and go to Doom9.org and tell him that he (Doom9) created "urban myth" and that he is one of the "+RW fanboys and promoters who have had to battle against the cheaper DVD-R media."

  25. If cost of the media will be a factor in who will win at the end, then, in my area
(San Jose, CA), it seems that you can get a better price for R+ disks from both
MicroCenter and CompUSA. Both are decent computer stores.

    For MicroCenter
    http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0159887
You can not find R- with matching price here.

    For CompUSA,
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=304900&pfp=ADPRODUCTS
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=304901&pfp=ADPRODUCTS
The disk speed is 4X for R+ and 2X for R-. But they cost the same.

  26. bottom line: the cheapest of the cheap DVD+R will never ever be as cheap as the cheapest DVD-R...

    1X Princo DVD-R $0.71/each

this is because DVD+R has to pay more royalties...i personally don't believe that one format "costs" more to manufacture than the other

    --------------

btw.....these threads are useless. most new dvd players support both formats, so even if one format would theoretically die, there will always be dvd players that support it. however, it seems that neither format is going away anytime soon. just because YOU see more +R discs at B&M doesn't mean they carry more +R discs in general..... you alway have to factor in online sales. www.pricewatch.com doesn't even have a DVD+R/RW section.

    -------------

oh....also, it's kinda good there are 2 competing formats because the competition will spur better innovations in both formats and drive down prices.

    ----------

also, be prepared for the same thing when next generation comes out...i.e. blue ray vs. blue laser

    Hi,

Few years ago on Discovery channel they showed a crystal cube /1 cub cm/ which stores data in 3 dimensions and can hold up to 250 films.
If they have this and show it on TV can you even imagine the things that are classified yet?
After they make enough money from the current formats the next will be launched.
Until then I don't care because I have DUAL format burner and my DVD player plays EVERYTHING I throw in it.

    Enjoy!

  29. Who cares! More computer writers able to write all formats so it doesn't matter, mine writes all but DVD-RAM. The format war probably won't even exist in the future because of this, people will just buy what ever is the best deal.
