  1. I just purchased a DVD burner and would like to convert my LDs (laser disc) to DVD. My LDs are mostly concerts and karaokes. Is there any way for doing this? If so, what are the steps? Would all the features on the LD such as karaoke retained? Do I need a video capture card to do that? Thanks.

Start by reading the Beginner's Guides in the Guides aection at left, as they may anwer most of your questions. Then go to the Capture section a bone up on capturing. Once you have the minimal skills to do that, it is now on to conversion to DVD. The DVD portion in the Convert section will help you there. Now that you have your video file, you are now ready to move on to authoring and burning, so go to Authoring. As for hardware, a video capture is always a good start. A good starter card in my opinion is the Hauppage WinTV Go ($50.00 USD).

It may sound a little daunting, but once you get into it, it is relatively easy to master.

One more piece of advice: Use DVD±RWs before using DVD±Rs. Beginner's tend to make a few mistakes when they are first learning to burn, and DVD±RWs are reuseable.

  3. Thanks for the response. I vaguely remember there was a set of instructions posted before on that subject but I could not find it now.
Since the digital files on the LD cannot be copied for conversion, I suppose I need to use a video capture card and encode it to DVD. I remember I have to switch between digital and analog for the karaoke LD. Does it mean the chapter selection and karaoke function will be lost?

  4. If you find a DVD Author program that makes Karoke DVDs, you can get the video and audio then author your own karoke.
