  2. Yes they will they are backwards compatible...but you will only be burning at 2X. Since 2X media is still cheaper than 4X media, me thinks that might be the way to go.

  5. It also depends which firmware you have, most 4x media will only burn at 1x on the Pioneer 104. I have one of those drives and ended up going with firmware 1.40 2x for all. That way I could burn 2x with some princo 4x media I found cheap. The results were great.

better watch it thou. i too have a04 with the hacked firmware. however, that firmware overrides the drives internal control. most of the time, the drives will determine the optimal burn speed (laser strength, etc...) to burn a particular media. with that 2x hack, you basically override this...so it could be the case that the burner is not burning those media optimally. i have since been burning at 1X for 1X rated media, even though 2X hack allows me to burn them at 2X.

burning sub-optimally might get you in the long run... maybe make the DVD-R less compatible with standalones, etc...

  8. Didn't the older Pioneer drives (pre-A05/105 models) have a problem with 4x media at some point? I remember reading about the drives being damage by it, which prompted Pioneer to release a firmware updage to fix the problem. Just a heads up...

  9. I have given up hope writing at 2x with my pioneer A04 using firmware 1.40Ritek2X for all. Even with good brand Verbatim DVD-R 2X write was unsuccesful. I have bought the new TDK 4X write which is good.
