  1. So I let someone borrow my dvd player like 4 months ago...which sucks, because now I just bought a dvd burner and realized that I didnt have a dvd player!

So, can a ps2 or xbox play burned movies without hardware modificiatioin?? Nothing out of the ordinary here...the same movies they would play normally NTSC, dvd-r or dvd+r doesnt matter.

    Thanks.

  2. My friend's PS2 (no mods) plays my movie backups (dvd-r) better than my stand-alone player. Freaking bastard...now I have to go and get one...lol

  3. My PS2 loves all the DVDs that I have burned with my Sony DRU-500ULX. Have used several brands with equal success.

Woah - hold on a second, I have heard that the XBOX only plays DVD+RW movies. I haven't tested this out myself, but I seem to remember reading it around here somewhere. I didn't want everyone reading this thread to go on thinking that you could throw anything (DVD-R espically) at the XBOX and it would play it. I think it will only read CD-RW and DVD-RW.

  7. My experience:

    PS2 play successfully DVD-R , DVD+R , DVD-RW but NOT DVD+RW

The strange thing is that my DVD+RW is the "SONY" Branded included in the Sony DRU500A pack.

    Sony Vs Sony?

The xbox susally will play dvd+r, dvd-r or dvd +/-rw, just fine as long as the laser is pretty good and you use good media like verbatim, apple or ritek

  10. The PS2 not playing DVD+-RW has nothing to do with the brand really, it has mor to do withthe laser's ability to read the media, as RW physical media is slightly different than a regular +-R.

The XBOX plays DVD+-R movies just fine with or without a menu, but I have never been able to get the PS2/XBOX or my stand alone Panasonic to play RW, but my SOny will.

I agree version 1-4 ps2 ususally wont read + r media very well or not at all (This is not always the case but I ran into more that will not than will play) also they dont ususally read dvd+rw and dv-rw either

Version 5-7 ususally will wear either + or - very well
Mines read dvd+ RWand dvd- RW very well They have a lot better lasers
and the quality of the laser is the largest factor in determing what type of media to play

Microsoft did a way better job at making lasers than sony

However there are lots of people who by $.70 brand dvds and they cant ever get them to work (then they blame the chip) and when they switch to ritek apple or verbatim dvd-rs they work just fine

I can confirm that PS2 can play +R +RW and -RW and that XBOX can play +RW. I have not tested the other variations.

  14. both ps2 and xbox can play nearly any type of disc... however, in the case of the xbox, you are better off having a Samsung DVD drive rather than a Philips or Thomson. By the way, playstation 2 is coming out with a v9 which has an included IR sensor [no need for ir dongle] and remote with power off and disc functions. This version has been released in Japan and Australia and will make its way around, hopefully making it to the US. Laser is expected to be the same as the v7.

yes, they both can. However, in the case of the Xbox, if you do add a modchip, then you can install software called DVD-X v2 which allows you to play movies without the need for the DVD Dongle Kit, using your controller as the "remote". The modchip will also allow you to utilize the Xbox Media Player software which will let you play DivX, SVCD, VCD, AVI, XVID, WMV, etc. on your xbox.

  15. Nopt sure about the PS2 but I know that the Xbox will play DVD+-R's just one little thing they can't be region free. The Disk must match the region of the Xbox (i.e. region 1 etc.)

They can be region free... Mine will only play DVDR's if the booktype is set to DVD-ROM, but region free works fine.

  19. after playing around a bit with dvdxcopy and dvd2one (dvdxcopy played fine with the xbox) I got my dvd2one backups to work in my xbox useing the newest nero update. Backup up work fine with or with out menus. That is as long as I use the DvD-Video option.

  20. Regarding DVD-R play in XBOX:

    It depends on 2 things:
which drive your XBOX has (Thompson, Philips or Samsung)
    and
    brand of the DVD-R media

Samsung brand drives are the best but still are picky with certain types of media. BeAll media from meritline has the best compatibility for "cheap" media.
