    There are R2 DVD's I want to buy, but I can't play them on my standalone player. If I convert a R2 DVD to VCD, can I play it on my R1 player?

    Never tried it myself but a Ripper called CLANDVD2.0 can rip them to be Multiregion.
    As i have said I have never tried it but you can get the programmes from here

    Ummmm, I'm not positive, but fairly certain that VCDs don't (and can't) contain any "region" information. Ripping and re-encoding to VCD will automatically make it region free. Ripping to burn to a backup DVD-R is where this is an issue.
