  1. Ok. So I have an avi movie that is 1.3g and 2 hours long. Load into tmpgenc as the guide on this site states...Problem is, the video it wants to encode is at least twice as long in minutes and 200% capacity of the dvd!!!!!

The guide states to do something to the direct show filter priority but when i tried to do that, it said no filter found or something like that!

Suggestions? and is there another way to get avi movies ready for dvd burning?

TMPGenc is slow compared to some of the other encoders. My encodes with TMPG, if I use VBR, take about 4-5x the original length (ie 6 - 7.5 hours for a 90 minute movie) on an XP-1700-based machine.

so yeah, that sounds about right.

you can try CCE or Main Concept for faster processing, but I find CCE difficult to work with, and Main Concept gives me terrible encodes.

  4. for a divx 5 movie, do i need to extract the audio? I tried to do that with virtualdub but it said appropriate audio decompressor not found...I am trying to reencode it anyway without seperating the audio first to see how it sounds and looks. It's widescreen so I hope it preserves its aspect...

    We'll see.

if you installed the divx 5 codec, you should have no problem. i never extract the audio from the source file. just use the source in tmpgenc for both video and audio. if you have ac3 audio to deal with, just install odio dekoda. i have had no problems with audio sync since i did this as long as i check for and remove bad frames using vdub mp3freeze. i've been posting this solution for quite a while now.

and yes, it takes a long time to encode with tmpgenc, but it's worth the wait because of the quality. just set it up for a batch encode overnight and go to sleep. should be done when you get up unless you don't sleep very long! lol

Use my guide down below for your shiznit, except for the audio (need to update this mother). To demux the audio using VDubMod, then encode it to any format your heart desires (within reason) with BeSweet (GUI is available).
My AVI -> Any Format Guide is available here.
My Frame Resize Calculator (enhanced for Virtualdub) is available here
