  7. I've used dvd shrink before and for the most part i really like it. However, it's my understanding that if you use the re-author mode, it's just like putting different video files on a dvd and you lose the nice menu system of the original dvd. I personally always want to keep the menus while still maintaining the highest possible quality for the dvd.

I don't usually watch the several hours of crap extras like the director sitting in a chair ranting on and on about the movie, so why not just remove the extras you don't want to free up more space for the movie.

I don't think it would be to difficult to implenent the feature into a program like dvd shrink. You could have a split second dvd compliant mpeg2 file that the program replaces the unwanted extras with. This would still allow you to keep the menu system of the original dvd and would leave more space for the main movie.

If anyone knows of a program or any other way to do this please come forward because i'm sure it would be a great help to a lot of people out there.

DVD95COPY 1.4 is what I use. Identify which vts conains the extras. Delete the vob's from that vts but keep the ifo/bup files.
DVD95COPY will compress the directory and happily ignore the absence of the vob's but you must be sure the ifo/bup files are there. It will compress the directory to 4.37GB's keeping the menus and movie.

I agree! This would be an excellent feature in a future version of dvd shrink. Some of us can only hope the program author thinks of it soon.

CloneDVD does what you want. Keeps the menus, replaces the extras with a splitsecond grey screen.

I must admit that i've only briefly looked at CloneDVD, but i didn't think that it did re-encoding so you can fit a movie from a DVD-9 on to a
DVD-5. Even if you removed all the extras, many movies (especially longer ones) wouldn't fit.

It seems like a few different programs have some desired features but none of them have them all.

I could be wrong though about CloneDVD and if I am please correct me.

I still think dvd shrink comes the closest to accomplishing what i mentioned earlier in this thread. If only they had an option to completely remove the extra (i.e. replace with blank mpeg2 file) instead of only turning a video into a collection of stills.

CloneDVD does transcoding. Its quality is on par with DVD Shrink in many ways, and really shines at higher bitrates (i.e. only going from 5.0GB to 4.5GB).

But it DOES have quite a few nice features, such as the ability to selectively remove extras and replace them with blank screens, thereby dropping their size drastically.

It also has a very nice intelligent menu keeper - which means that you can navigate through all the cool menus TO the special features.

Anyway, I like it quite a bit. I'd prefer if it had an "expert" mode where you could see what it was going to do, but otherwise it makes me happy and tingly all over.
