  1. hey guys whats up
just wanted to see if I could get a quick question answered
i am about to convert some vcds and svcds to dvd
so that i could play them in standalone on one dics (dvd)
now i understand about the dvd-vcd and dvd-svcd
but i do not want to use those formats b/c they do not play in all dvd players plus do not play in ps2
i want to just convert the svcd to dvd in regular dvd format using tmpgenc
and my question is will the dvd player still consider it a dvd if the bitrate is considerable lower like around 1500 on each movie
i ask this b/c thats the only way i can fit more than on movie to a dvd if i of course lower the bitrate

I read the article on DVD-R and it looks like you cannot go below a btirate of 3000.

  5. I think that is incorrect. Looking at the bitrates for SVCD it looks like the min is 1500 but that isn't the case. I'm pretty sure the figures are for the average and maximum bitrate in a variable bitrate stream.

I'm not an expert at DVD but I would also suggest using 352x576/480 format rather than full resolution. It's an official DVD format and will save half the bitrate with no noticable loss in visual quality. Trust me.

This is a bit of a guess but using the standard Tmpeg DVD template for an example you have

CQ - A variable bitrate setting
    Max - 7000
    Min - 2000

Set the resolution to 352 rather than 720 horizontal resolution and drop the max bitrate to 3500 and min to 1000 and you should get the same compression quality visually as you have halved the resolution and halved the bitrate.

This is a bit of a simplification but I'm sure it works. Rempeg uses this technique to convert large DVD files to files small enough to fit on a DVD-R.

    Good luck

    Raavin

PS unfortunately rempeg doesn't work with svcd files, only dvd
