  1. I started with the .mpg (MPEG-2) file below

    (From AVIcodec)
    File : 713 Mb (0.0 b), duration 0:00:00, type MPG, 1 audio stream(s), quality 88 %

    Video : 0.0 b, 2520 Kbps, 29.970 fps, res. 480*480 (16:9), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD), Supported

    Audio : 0.0 b, 224 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 chan., 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0], Supported

and wanted to convert to a Divx 5.0.3 file

To do so, I used VirtualDub-1.4.13-MPEG2-AC3. I first created a separate wav file. Here is what I did step by step. I set the audio to full processing, then set the conversion rate from 41000Hz to 48000HZ, checked high quality, leaving the precision at 16-bit and the channels at stereo. I then set the compression at PCM (no compression), and saved the wav file.

After that was complete I set the audio to no audio, set the video compression to divx 5.0.3 and saved the avi.

I then used Ulead VideoStudio 6 to check the audio and video sync. What I found was that the wav file was 45:35.29 minutes long while the video file was 58:41.12 minutes long.

Now here is the bizarre part the wav wasn't missing any data nor was the avi file.

I tried a different approch. Using TMPGEnc, version 2.513.53.162 core version 1.96.149, I used the original mpg (mpeg-2) file as the audio source, selected the ES(audio only) stream type and created an mp2 audio file. Using Ulead VideoStudio 6, I once again compared the new mp2 audio file to the divx video and found that the audio was 41:35.28 minutes long. Even shorter!!!

I might have assumed that the original mpg file was damaged, except that the movie came in 3 parts and all 3 parts exhibited the same behavior when the audio was extracted. All 3 of the original mpg files play fine and the audio is in perfect sync when embedded in the original mpg file.

For some reason the audio is being truncated when extracted, and I do not have a clue why. I have a sneeking suspicion that this ws done by design, to prevent the file from being converted, but even so how do I get a proper audio file?

    HELP!!!!

  2. I just checked something that changes things a bit.

I checked the movie time of the original mpg (mpeg-2) and it turns out that the total time according to windows media player 41:35 minutes. This means the mp2 audio file is the correct length, but the avi video file has been streached. Not that I still know what to do about it though.

No need to extract the audio. Leave it in your MPEG, and just save it as a new file. If everything works, the audio will stay locked with the video, and your resulting DivX should be fine. I would suspect your mpeg's are damaged, probably in the burning process, or when they were ripped back off of SVCD.

If all else fails, just frame serve them back to VirtualDub with something like DVD2AVI (you can also use DVD2AVI to save them in DivX format).
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...
