Problem on putting MPEG file on DVD

Here's the thing i have the movie as a divx format (.avi). I succesfully (i hope) encoded it to MPEG. Now I try to put it on my blank DVD RW, but when put it in my DVD player it doesn't play back. Maybe I'm not burning it on rite...Can I use some software that I can download to burn the file on to my DVD RW or could there be another problem or am I missing something. does your dvd player support DVD-RW?

also, are you simply just burning the .mpg file as is on the DVD (i.e. DATA DVD)???

you need to author the .mpg to DVD VIDEO.

Yea I'm just burning the .mpg file raw on the the dvd. I havnt authored it. Ho do u do that?
