Why is Nero 5.5 bad for burning movies?
I heard a lot of people dont like it. Any explaination on why its better to ISO the movie and then burn with DVD Decrypter?

If its a DVD-5 I do a straight copy in DVD Decrypter...if its DVD-9, I rip with DVD Decrypter, cut features or re-encode in DVDShrink and then burn in Nero, 5.5.10.35, to be exact. So far no problems for me on my Pioneer DVR-104 using TDK2X Media made in Taiwan. If a movie won't work after being burnt in Nero it could be system problems, user errors, bad media, or a problem with their DVD burner. Just don't use Nero to do a straight copy of a movie as it doesn't decrypt it...it works well for me for PS2 DVD based games though oddly enough.
As for why DVD Decrypter is better, its stated above. Nero can not decrypt a DVD so any movie you try to do a 1:1 copy of in Nero will appear to have burnt correctly but it won't play in any player or DVD drive. I learned the hard way but luckily I used a DVD-RW, not a DVD-R. With DVD Decrypter you can do a straight burn or rip files and then re-encode or re-author with a different program. DVD Decrypter is also freeware, yet another reason its superior. -
I've never had a problem with Nero burning movies. I always rip the files, even if it's a straight DVD-5 to DVDR, then take the copied files and burn them.
Some people have issues with Nero, I'd think it might be a media problem, user error any numbers of things. It's hard to determine, really what is causing issues since we are not there and cannot see what the person is doing or what options they have set.
The only coasters that I have ever made can al be atributed to human error as my HAL9000 only does what I tell it to do. -
never had problems w/ any version of nero to burn (S)VCD.
currently using nero express to burn DVDs...no problems wutsoever -
i never had a problem with nero either and i burnt a nice amount of dvds

Some people have no problems with Nero.
Other people have NOTHING but problems when using Nero to burn Video DVD's.
It's great for everything else.
The problems MOSTLY arise from the fact that Nero incorrectly writes UDF 1.5 instead of 1.2, and a few other "bad by default" bugs.
They've been corrected, for the most part, in Nero 6.

most disc written this way will play in almost all udf 1.05 systems but not all. some old dvd player with dvd video won't recognize them (very few)
they designed the new system for better compatiblity. it just don't work on a lot of older players
i personally burn my most of my discs with instant cd/dvd udf video mode udf 1.02 as they play in almost everything (they play in everything i've throw at them except one player, but gear's disc play it) as does gear pro udf 1.02
as my newer version of Nero Express doesn't give me that option
i took the old nero burning rom off my computer even though i could have kept both of them together -
Yeah, Nero is just one of those programs. You love it or you hate it. I personally have never had a problem with it, but there are plenty of those who do. One of the underlying themes of the forums is that if its working for you, stick with it, even if others tell you that its worthless crap.

So should I burn using UDF 1.02 or 1.5 then?
My friend has a Panasonic DVD player (about 5 months old) and he cant play my DVD's. I used Nero that did not give you the UDF 1.02 or 1.5 option so Im not sure what it burned as. Got the new version that gives you the option now. Which UDF should I pick to get the most compatibility.
Also should I force DVD compatiblity (required for XBOX)?

Sorry. 1.02 is the "most compatible" mode. My bad.
I'm getting lousy with numbers in my "old age" (just turned 28).

there was a compatibility problem with dvds burned with a couple of versions of nero (5.5.9.10 especially) these have been fixed in later versions
