I understand the DVD Specs., and realize that VHS caps are wasted above 352x480.
I plan to cap VHS using my DV Passthru which will create DV AVI files.
My question is; should I capture at default DV AVI 720x480 with a high bitrate and THEN transcode to 352x480 4000 CBR?
I have read some posts that suggest the cap at a higher rate and then transcoding downward has a better quality.
Thanks,

Cap at the highest res an bitrate you can, then downsize it. I know it doesn't make much sense, but it really does get you the best quality.

If you can capture DV.avi at something other than 704/720x480 I'd like to know how you're doing it!

If you mean you are copying the file from your DV machine to your PC, that is not "Capturing" you are just copying a digital file and you cant change it's resolution from the DV device to your PC

OK, fine!
The VHS/DVD/LD signal is fed through the camcorder's A-D converters, at which point the "capture" is actually taking place. In real-time and with no dropped frames, I might add.
"Is that better?" Eggar, MIBAre you looking down my shirt?
