  3. If I'm correct the dru-500A can't write 4x without the upgrade for this drive.

TDK and Verbatim +R 4X media burns very reliably at 4X. These discs are made by Ricoh. Supposedly the Memorex 4X media is also Ricoh and should work very well. These seem to be about the best 4X media for the Sony that people have found so far. I also have 2.0f firmware and have no trouble burning these at 4X. I have a 4X media sampler on order from Meritline so I can try some other brands (especially -R types). I have not seen any 4X -R media in any of the retail stores I frequent (Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City) yet.

Firmware 2f burns at 4x, no problem. Maybe it's a bad disk.

You did not mention Staples in your list of frequented stores, but I have seen DVD-R 4X Memorex 25-pack in a local Staples store. I also have not seen any other DVD-R 4X disks anywhere else.

  9. I just bought 2X DVD-R (branded TDK) from BestBuy. I saw 4X for TDK, but they were all out, also saw Memorex 4X DVD-R, plenty of those, but I am still not willing to buy Memorex cause of bad experience. The TDK DVD-R are great, they load up faster than my previous media and they also play on PS2 console.
