Its still a "debated" topic as to if these are true or not.
Speaking as a mac user, these G5's are going to blow our G4's out of the water. How it really stacks up to the P4's I think is still being debated.

My, you must have been a member for a while. I can't wait 'til I'm member long enough for those things. How long does it take? This should probably be moved btw.

  5. Can you really compare a brand name PC to anything these days? I mean, they use the cheapest things they can find in the dumpster and slap it together in an over-priced heap. For true PC benchmarks, you would have to find someone with a high-end PC and compare it against your own Macs. Can you actually build your own Mac?

I believe some sort of patents keep third-parties from making Mac parts generically like the PC platform. Remember, PC is an open platform, whereas Apple is a company that chooses to not adopt the platform.

In the prebuilt world AlienWare, some Dells, some Compaq/HP machines, and some IBMs are definite competitors to Mac G3/G4/G5 in terms of benchmark contests.

I love my Compaq PC, and likewise my friend loves his Mac G4, and we've been known to switch when projects deemed it necessary. I'm savvy across both systems. After all the arrogance of "Mac vs PC" is removed, they're just machines. I, along with many others, find Mac to have superior color-matching and gamma correction on images. It's the choice platform of news and publishing, which I work in. I remember suggesting to an editor once that we buy a PC. I was laughed out of the newsroom. But at the time, it was the only platform with decent Web development software, and still is from my experience.

What we need next is a MAC emulator for PC. I've yet to see one operate as decently as VirtualPC does on a Mac. Getting back to the original question, the reason PC answers are given for Mac questions, and vice versa, is that in today's merging tech worl, they are valid. If you have a problem with a video file, there is not reason to get pissy when somebody suggests loading Windows 2000 in VPC and giving TMPGEnc a try. If I had a Mac emulator, I'd guarantee you I'd operate DVD Studio Pro instead of DVD Workshop. And I prefer the Final Cut Pro timeline over Premiere.

Mac are a minority, so sometime a PC answer is easier to comeby, hence the crossover responses. And no, not everything a PC can do can be done on a Mac, and the same is true in reverse. Mac can do things my PC salivates for. To each their own, but if you're given a legitimate response, don't lash out with "I have a Mac, take your PC and goto hell," but rather "thanks, I'll give it a try in VPC if no Mac software pans out."

regarding the PCM audio if people can name some dvds with pcm audio (i dont feel like lookin through my whole collection) i could probably find a way to do it very easily (to rip the raw pcm or even direct to aiff). Most things are possible people are just ready to give up too easily or use solutions in VPC, thats one of the biggest problems, instead of people taking initiative to find answers or fill the void, they go for the easy out (if you consider emulating stuff REALLLLLLY slow in VPC an easy out)

and do we really NEED an ifo editor anymore, while i agree it would be useful its not longer truely a necessity. I mean the only reason to really need to edit an ifo file is to repack certain aspects of a dvd to scale down to 4.3 gigs from dvd 9.. and dvd2one pretty much fills that void. The amount of effort needed to do any of that stuff in VPC (or even use os 9.. seriously i hate that os) i'd rather try to develop somethin on the mac side or not do it at all...if theres a will theres a way, sometimes the path isnt always as easy as mac users want it

  8. It's starting to look like Apple needs to make the RISC better at multitasking and running more instructions per clock cycle because the x86 architecture is starting to catch up to the RISC in that respect. It used to be like a risc with half the clock of an x86 can meet up with it........NOT ANYMORE! Ok, after some Mac user comes and counters my arguement, can we just end this Mac vs PC debate because as both technologies advance, they will probably diversify more, and, thus, there will be no superior platform. I agree with what lordsmurf said. They're good at their own thing.

    -----------------------------------
Has anyone contacted DERROW to see if he's developing an IFO edit for OSX?
I heard he's working for DVD X COPY now..
    also
Trai Forrester (The DVDGuy) has deveoped an IFO editor for
Mac OSX but its very expensive for what it does $250 or so

i think i can sum things up.

    1) Original post inquires what people are using OS 9 and Virtual PC for when it comes to video conversion and production ***UNDER MAC OS X***.

    2) Thread turns into Mac vs PC debate with PC trolls telling me that their platform is superior because they have 10,000 different MPEG2 encoders and over 5 million games.

    3) Flaming begins.

    4) Conclusion is that there is nothing that cannot be done under Mac OS X with the exception of PCM audio extraction from DVDs, in which case, Bile has offered to make a program to handle such if ONE SINGLE PERSON CAN PROVIDE ONE SINGLE DVD TITLE WITH PCM AUDIO. <sarcasm>"You mean to tell me that Mac OS X cannot extract the audio off of 1 out of every 5 trillion DVDs? How lame..."</sarcasm> The only other thing that cannot be done directly is the creation of IFOs, in which case you must use Ross's methods by way of a HexEditor OR use Sizzle.

We are looking into creation of an IFOEditor for OS X.

This is a Macintosh based video forum. PC users are welcome but trolls are not. If you can provide INSIGHT please do. If you have ideas, please share them. If you only know of a method of doing something that requires Windows, feel free to share those ideas as well. Keep in mind that most Macintosh users have the capability of running Windows [inside a window...] and are not afraid to do so. If you come in an attempt to talk shit about our platform, keep in mind that we will all defend each other and make you look like the idiot that you are. Anyone with any sort of technological knowhow knows that the Macintosh is a superior platform for Video, DVD Production, and Graphics.

Sorry we dont have 10 million games or Divx and MPEG2 encoders. If we have 10 to choose from and three of them work extremely well, who really cares about the rest?
