  3. well for one thing the +r format isnt popular among v1 through 4 due to low quality laser. i had a v4 once it wouldnt play +r format at all and i believe no one can play that type on those versions, but there have been and i do mean a few cases where it actually worked. But for v5 and up the +r format is good. if i were u i would stick with -r format due to compatibility among the ps'2 and standalone dvd players. and as far as media is concerned stick with ritek dvd-r. they are fairly cheap and are very good to the ps2 laser

  5. If you have GameShark 2/Actoin Pack 2 then you can do the knife trick....I've never done it before as I don't have either of those...:P

  7. I have a v.2 PS2 and it works fine with +R and -R. But not with +-RW. Experience is with Verbatim +R and Ritek G4 -R. You should experiment with one of each and go with the one that works for you.

  8. Actually, you don't do any modding or cutting or anything to the PS2. You just have to be careful with what you do. And, I have a question for PS2 experts:

Is there a way to load the PS2 Mediaplayer without having GS2/AP2 or any other disc that boots and waits or a MOD chip?

  10. among all dvd backup programs out there, i would highly recommend recordnow max. it has been the ps2 dvd backup software sense it came to our lives. everyone in the ps2 community(forums) has had more success with this sofware than any other software out there. and if u wanna get ur ps2 modded i recommend the messiah 2 pro or the DMS3. they both allow u to play ps2 games online without being dedected . just turn off ur mod and once ur online u can turn it back on. i have messiah 2 pro on my v5 and a DMS3 on my v7 and both work flawlessly. i just insert my ps2 dvd backup and whalla ...im sitting in my chair playing my game. and as far as the mediaplayer is concerned i think u need ur ps2 modded though im not really sure on that. i have both of mine modded with the ps2 reality player on mine. the reality player is stored on the 8mb memory card and is accessed from there as well. there is another one called Q cast tuner which is based more on a entertainment level than the reality player. the Q cast tuner is able to download media from the net from the optional ps2 online adapter and is able to play the latest up to date media. just do a search on it and im sure u will find more info on this product.

I knew this after the first hour or so dealing with RNM. I posted pretty much exactly what you are saying regarding compatibility on this site and MOST agreed RNM was amazing, while the few Nero Naive folks continued to try and defend that other crappy burn program.

Glad to see it's so compatible for PS2....I am an old school gamer...but may just get a PS2 soon.

sorry...don't quite agree with your view on nero. back in the old days, nero was very effective (and extremely simple) to author (S)VCDs. there may have been some versions of nero that had DVD compatibility issues, but i'm using the latest nero express, and it works great.

  13. like me and defense said as far as compatiblity goes on both standalone and ps2...recordnow max wins hands down. and as far as backuping a ps2 dvd game, RNM has had a almost a zero percent backup failure as compared to nero among the ps2 community. nero kinda doesnt like ps2 dvd based games and sometimes the ps2 doesnt like backups made by nero.

hey poopyhead dont me wrong here...i have both of these programs. i use nero to do my 990mb(overburning) on my vcds and svcd as well as mp3 and audio cds. but i use RNM to do my movies and p2 backups and in this department ...recordnow max wins

You can install a fliptop. And use Swap Magic Discs to play backups. It's only good for V1-V6. You can get it from PS2cover.com and if you want more information go to PS2OWNZ.COM and look at their forums.

I've got a V7 PS2 and I use the fliptop and swap magic discs. It sucks I wont be able to backup my Soul Calibur 2 once I get it in August but I can live with it. Theres a handful of games that won't work (since cdloader won't work on a V7) but there are so many more that do work, it is worth it to get a fliptop even with a V7 PS2 I think.

You need a boot disk or mochip to load the mediaplayer.

If they could make a media player disk that didnt require either method then they could develope self bootable disks and I think that is a long long long way off for the PS2 if ever.

  19. hey ridegroove....dont buy another no solder mods or swap magic disks or anything of that sort cause as the old saying goes "u get what u pay for". so i would highly recommend a messiah 2 pro or a dms3 as these two modchips can play everything u throw at it. every backup that i have is booted on these two chips. these two chips are kinda pricy but like i said earlier " u get what u pay for"..hehe.

there are alot of other not so good ways to play backups, but these methods will lead to the destruction of ur ps2 and it is alot of hassle to do the knife trick or to do the swap method. and also its time consuming. i dont know about u guys but when i wanna play a backup i want to be able to just pop it in and play it without any need of other methods.

and the program that i have been using for backuping my ps2 games is RECORDNOW MAX. to this date i have never had a bad burn. im gonna give u a short brief tutorial on backuping a ps2 game using RNM:

    1. open up ur recordnow max and click out of the wizard screen(if this is frist screen that pops up)
2.on the top left corner will display what drives u have(cd rom/ dvd rom/ dvd buner. etc) right click on the drive that the ps2 game is in and select disc explorere and drive properties.
    3. u will get another window and in this window will display the TOC size of the disc. select the global-image which is located on the right side of the window.
    4. a gloabl-image field will appear at the bottom of that window. in here browse to where u would like to backup ur ps2 game. once ur done giving it a name, hit build and the backup process will begin.
    5. after it is done after a few mins. open up the image by selecting image at the top of RNM.
    6. click on add file and browse for the file u just created. if ur game has a large TOC file size, then it will have more than one file. for example it will have gi gi(11) gi(12). select the one that has no number at the end. it will then automatically burn as a whole image.
    7. once ur done with that select ur dvd burner which is located on the left side of the screen
    8. after that hit the red record button and in a few mins u will have a working backup.

i thought i was gonna be brief but i guess i was wrong...hehe

Actually it doesnt void the waranty(you never break the seal)

You take the tray cover off and you use a card tool or peice of plastic that slides a pin to open the tray.

I dont recommend doing this since my PS2 is my friend so I would never stab it with a knife
