  1. I am using tmpeg to convert an avi file to an mpeg file in order to make a vcd. I have installed Gspot to identify the necessary codecs and it says I have the correct mpeg 4 codecs.

My problem is when I am using tmpeg and get to the part where I select my souce range for start frame and end frame, the video does not move. I have changed my environmental settings with the direct show multimedia to 2 and that doesn't help.

I have used Nero to try to encode/burn the avi file to disc, but when I play the disc, it is blank.

    Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

have you checked for and removed bad frames with vdubmp3? what version of tmpgenc are you using. i think it's 2.59 something that has a bug that causes problems like you're describing?

  3. I am using Tmpeg 2.59.....also when I try to use Virtual Dub with my avi, I get an error message saying it couldn't locate decompressor for mpeg 4; it says it requires video for windows compression codec........any suggestions for this problem too?

rather than doing this thing piece by piece, open the avi in gspot and post the info so we know what kind of file it is for sure. also, post what version of vdub you're using. tmpgenc 2.59 has bugs. you should use a different version.

  5. I got rid of Tmpeg 2.59...I will look for another version.....I have Virtual Dub version 1.5.2.

When I opened the file using Gspot, here is all of the info...hope this is all you need:

    File----22.2 mb
    Stream type&A/V Interleave---AVI, IMRR-N.S, I/L Not supported
    Video---4CC--Mpeg 4, 2 compatable codecs installed
    Runtime 20:18
    Bitrate 116; fps 10;
    Audio--codec name gsm610, codec installed
Bitrate 36 kps fs 22050 hz

Let me know if you need anything else

  6. That's a strange audio codec. It's a microsoft codec used mainly for cellular telephone transmissions. Try opening the file in virtual dub and saving the audio as a wav file. Then save the video as an avi only file (no audio). Load these new files directly into TMPG (or vdub if you want to frameserve). See if that helps.

That might be the problem, 2 codecs in conflict.

doesn't sound like he can open it in vdub with the version he has. try installing vdub mp3freeze from the tools section and open it with that. then direct stream the audio and save as wav. very strange audio on this file.

  9. I would love to try saving the audio/video in Virtual Dub, but it will not let me open the file because it cannot locate the decompressor for mpeg 4--says it needs compatable codec....do you think the file is junk?

  10. Try using goldwave to convert the audio file to wav.

Sounds like your video may be an Xvid...do you have these codecs instlaled? (Divx and Xvid)? These are both MP4 codecs, but not standard.

  12. Well, I have some good news. I got an earlier version of Tmpge and guess what? The avi is now converting to Mpeg format!!! Thanks for the great advice. I had been having trouble with Tmpge previously and my computer was freezing up---wonder if that was the whole problem??

But, when I am using Nero 5.5.9.14 to burn to to make a VCD, there is no picture on my tv.....just a bunch of blank lines......I know my DVD player is capable of playing these........Any advice guys????

  13. You won't believe it but I tried putting in an earlier version of Nero, just like I had to to with Tmpge and it burnt to vcd just fine and played in my dvd player!!! I am not sure what's going on, but I guess newer versions aren't always better......lessons learned.......thanks everyone for your help
