Hey all
Ok, so here's the thing.
DVDBackup 1.3 Set it to region free, do a rip, burn a copy it works in my player..... GREAT.
Now, send this same disk to your brother who's overseas (In a different region code for DVD's) and it doesnt play!!!!!!!!
In fact, it gives " this disc is not formatted to play this region"
what the heck is going on????
Any thoughts.

i was stumped when i got that error message from my circa-1999 sony set top player re: my dvd-backup de-regioned disc. until i read the player's specs. only supported ntsc formats. which sucks. and is technically non-spec, as pal formats are part of the same dvd spec, iirc. anyways, i had to do a dv-as-interim-stage reencoding to output an ntsc version. worked great. looked pretty good, too.

!!!YIKES!!!
reply from dvdbackup people:
"Sorry, I don't support DVDBackup for use with DVD2One. Those folks
charge for software that requires DVDBackup yet they don't share any of
their profits. Since you paid for DVD2One, talk to them for support."
looks like im up the creek for solving this one -

It seems that they are punishing the wrong people... An unintended consequence of putting a program into the public domain, is that someone else will attempt to capitilize on it (Linux...). It does not surprise me that DVD2ONEX will not share its income with them, as they probably did not build that cost into their business model. But such a cost would be passed on to the user/purchaser where it belongs anyway... Why not cut out the middleman?
Why not propose to the DVDBackup people that they setup a mechanism for users to make donations, such as PayPal. I know that I would certainly express my gratitude with a donation, if I could make one. Maybe then they would provide tech support to "donators."
Similar to the recent appeal that www.macintouch.com made to its reader community to help keep it alive; readers are making voluntary donations.

I noticed the following when opening the dvd in IFOEDIT
1. it is region free!!
2 if you tell ifo edit to make it region free again, it does something where its removing RCE Protection - something DVDBackup doesnt remove..
i emailed the new .ifo/.bup files to my brother, with them it works fine now. Strange huh. -

Agree!
I "donate" to the disco+ team to help support the Mac platform, but since i bought DTOX I no longer try to use disco+ (specially since I need PAL support).
I would be more than willing to help the DVDBackup team if they put some sort of donation option.

The problem isn't the region, but the video format. US uses NTSC and Europe uses PAL. Have your brother get multi-format DVD player, or an NTSC player and TV

i guess dvdbackup doesnt remove RCE (region code enhancement??) -
Region Code Enhancment:
Abbreviated RCE, it is a digital enhancement added to some studios DVDs to stop region 1 (R1) DVDs from playing on Region-free DVD players. -
Thats exactly what it is!!!!!!!!!!!
His player is region free!!!!!!!!!!!!! So i made the disk region free, yet it keeps the RCE so thats got to be it!
IFO EDIT removed the RCE, so its just one extra step.
This is interesting news!
perhaps someone should msg dvd backup people and suggest putting this in the next update. I would, but apparently ive already messaged them and they didnt like what I had to say it would seem
