  1. Hello Experts,

What is the best DVD Player I can buy for cheap so that it can play CD-R's VCD's SVCD's and SVCD's with menus without any roblems. I don't want to spend more money cause I already have a Panasonic DVD Player which I have spent more than 400 bucks and it does not support CD-R's or VCD's or SVCD's.

Would really appreciate your help guys.

    Regards

I didn't think the new Apex players played (S)VCD's...

  9. personal opinion:

if you want cheap that can play everything, then go for Apex.

however, there were some Apex models that did NOT have (S)VCD support because Philips claimed Apex didn't pay royalties. now, ppl have said that Apex is starting to put (S)VCD support back in their latest models after yanking them from some earlier ones. you need to test that particular model first before buying. i don't recall which models were involved.

cheap players are cheap for a reason...they are made from low quality parts. some can play everything, but don't expect it to last for long. they might, but it's a chance.

    ----------

i generally trust pioneer dvd players as they can play most everything as well...and have really great quality. in fact, my pioneer dv333 have played the "outer edge" of those 1X, cheapo princos, while other players simply freeze.

  10. Pioneer...compatiblity...

Actually, I looked into it, Pioneer's all around compatibilty is not bad but...for compatibility go with Philips.

Also, check out the LITEON PhoMaster LVD-2001 and the Neuston Maestro DVX-1201

  12. I would advocate buying a player that meets the following requirements:

    a) All round capability to play DVD, DVD±R(W), CR-R(W), VCD, SVCD, MP3, etc.
    b) Multi-disk tray, especially for (S)VCDs.
    c) Digital (optical and coaxial), Component, Composite and S-Video output
    d) All Region-code witchable and macrovision disabled
    e) PAL/NTSC with a hardware toggle switch to toggle between AUTO --> PAL --> NTSC
    f) Universal voltage (110V ~ 240V, 50/60 Hz)
    g) Dolby Digial plus DTS decoding

Such players are now-a-days mostly available on mail-order only. Worth the extra money.

Lenoxx 2003 is a good cheap dvd player to purchase and easy to make macrovision and region free via remote control. $59.99 at COMPUSA.
    It plays VCDS AND SVCDS.

APEX is a good one too but you need to make sure you have the correct model and serial # to apply region free and macrovision free. They do have a tendency to have heat problems with some units. Check out this APEX FORUM SITE.

may wanna check out the dvd player compatibility section of this website. pioneers are considered very good quality...though they still tend to be on the more expensive side.

pioneer's tend to play most everything...and even handle stuff that other players freeze on and/or just simply reject.

    -------------

while focusing on the features, longevity needs to be considered as well. Apex players, which have very good compatibility, are most likely cheap for a reason. their parts are questionable at best. who knows how long they'll last. i've heard that Apex DOA rate is almost 1 in 10 just out-of-the-box. the reason i got a pioneer is because i wanted a player that could last...even if i were to abuse it, which happens when testing.

keep in mind, there are exceptions....certainly, i've also heard of ppl owning Apex players for quite some time and pioneer players lasting for less than a year...i'm only speaking in general.

    Just to name a few...
Basicly, all the "made in china" standalones, plays anything!

Exception: Amoisonic: It doesn't like many kind of x(S)VCDs.

  17. I have two Pioneer DVD players, and they play anything I throw at them. Neither have gone wrong, and they don't suffer little niggles like some cheap ones still do.

    And, they look nice![/img]
