  1. With USB 2.0 available on pretty much every new motherboard I've looked at, I must pose a question. Can their be a widely accepted "good" USB capture device now? Is it all about the throughput of these devices or is it more of an issue with the codecs these devices use and not being able to effectively convert to (S)VCD/DVD in real-time? I'll tell you, I do not own any USB (capture) devices and formulated my opinion only from what I've heard and read. What do you think? ANY opinion welcome...

Check out the Adaptec VideOh! solutions. Apparently they have a new one out that also has a built in TV tuner. I have the original PCI card and it demonstrates great MPEG capture quality and I'm told the USB 2.0 version is just as good.

    Good luck!

  3. Everything I have read has told me USB 2.0 just doesn't cut it -- while the specs show it equal (or better) to firewire, either it doesn't deliver or it suffers from bad drivers, etc.

Why look for anything better than firewire -- it's proven, it works, and you get no frame dropped captures. I know I wouldn't try to fix something that isn't broken.

I use Adaptec Videoh DVD and capture thru USB2 at 7500. Works great and perfect synch.

  5. And no dropped frames, right?

As long as you're not dropping any frames it looks as though USB2 is good to go when it comes to this kind of work.

Yes, no dropped frames. Spits out mpg ready to put on DVD. If I need to do any filtering, I frameserve to VirtualDub, so I still have most of the benefits of avi.
