I have a few home movies, that I will be capturing and transferring to DVD, that have some gaps(blank space) between some scenes. Is it possible to edit them out before I burn them to a DVD? I really want to remove these gaps.

YES. there are many editing programs out there. after you import them onto your PC. you vcan use TPMGEnc to edit the unwanted material.
